have you asked omlet if they have any reconditioned ones?, they are cheaper and are delivered alot quicker.
also look on the for sale thread on the omlet forum.

ladytophamhatt, I got my chickens from Martinswood chickens near Ripe, East Sussex if that's anywhere near you..... They seem to do all sorts of hybrids (I got a light sussex, a bluebelle and a blacktail but they also had black sussex, white star, speckledy, various red sorts etc).

ladytophamhatt · 14/04/2008 08:58

Dilbertina, yes thats where we're getting them from. We went up there a few week ago to have a look, they're really helpful, aren't they?

I'm in Seaford btw...

dilbertina · 14/04/2008 10:33

yeah, they seemed nice, they donated me some straw and actually put me off buying things they didn't think were necessary to start with.

"choosing" the chickens was interesting. trying to explain which one I wanted whilst 100 chickens ran past the chap catching them was kind of hard!

Mine have been absolutely fine healthwise. They were not quite 16 weeks when I got them but all started laying within 6 weeks. I am now reliably getting an egg a day from each one!

29 may is the earliest they can deliver.

The Boys are on half term then so at least they can all be here when we get it.

mh - you only stop buying poultry when you start rearing your own. It's a slippery slope I tell you...

mh - Light Sussex are big, friendly, (make fabulous mother hens) and lay around 300 eggs a year. They will lay through the winter too. I love 'em. And if you want variety of colour they come in Silver (black with white necks) and Speckled too. The classic white with black neck is on my profile I think (though she looks a bit scary)!

Just checked my profile - there are Light Sussex hens from last autumn on it, they're just about POL in that photo (20 weeks). The one at the front is an Amber Star who was tiny for ages but is a fairly decent size now as well. Don't they have lovely fluffy bottoms?!

How many hens/eggs do you want mh? If you get large breeds, you could have say half that are good layers - like my Sussex girls (yes, they're easy to handle) and half fluffy, nice-to-look at but not such good layers. Then you should get enough eggs but a nice mix of hens too.

I'm after some blue eggs to add to the mix - I might hatch some Araucana or Legbars later in the year.

Just thought you girls would like to know my SIL was due to have her cube delivered on monday but it arrived today so it seems sometimes they get to their new homes early.

Wooooo-Hoooooo.

Doodle2U · 25/04/2008 15:52

LTH - did she have it delivered by Omlet or by courier, do you know?

ladytophamhatt · 25/04/2008 15:55

Courier AFAIK

Doodle2U · 25/04/2008 15:59

Cheers

I ask because mine is being delivered by Omlet but I have heard of other people getting deliveries both earlier and later. They have been courier jobs, as opposed to Omlet deliveries.
