Hi
We are busy converting wendy house into chicken house and wondered what breeds you would recommend? We are starting with 4 chickens. We would like friendly, good layers.....

As first chickens you'd probably be best off with hybrids of some sort. A modern brown hybrid (ISA Warren, Gingernut Ranger, Bovan Goldline) is a friendly, good laying chicken. It's basically a Rhode Island Red/Light Sussex Cross. They lay light brown eggs.

Black Rocks are very hardy, not quite as friendly but better layers imo - a bigger, creamy coloured egg. They stand up to the rain better and I think lay for longer.

Anything leghorn based (eg White Star) will give you a white egg - they can be a bit skittish though.

Amber Stars are beautiful - white chickens with flecks of brown. Similar to the brown chickens in laying ability/egg colour.

Speckeldys are maran crosses and give a dark brown egg. They're pretty friendly too, and look lovely.

Have a look on this page for some pics - this is where I got my two goldlines from.

If I were getting new chickens now, I would probably go for more of a mixture - I have 2 goldlines, a speckeldy and a black rock. When it comes to the time to get a new flock, I would ideally like a gold campine for white eggs, an amber star a Fenton Blue or cream legbar for blue eggs and a wheaten maran for dark coloured eggs plus maybe a black rock and a bluebelle. That's my wish list!

I desperately want some Brahmas and also Norfolk Black turkeys....
ISA Browns are wonderful layers and lovely nature but die young.
Sussex are nice wee hens too and very good layers.

TheDuchyEggOfNorksBride · 21/03/2008 20:21

We've had lots of Light and Silver Sussex hens and they have probably been the best layers - laying throughout the winter and well past being 3 or 4 yo.

If you're not having a cockerel try and get birds that will be the same size. We have an Amber Star who is quite small compared to the rest of the flock and I think she'd be bullied if it wasn't for our very fine Vorwerk cock keeping everyone in line.

I don't like Warrens, they look bloody awful when moulting and I do like a nice looking chicken about the place!

KatyMac · 21/03/2008 20:24

You are so predictable Cod

I just knew you would say roast chicken

GentleOtter · 21/03/2008 20:45

specially for Auntie Cod

tortoiseSHELL · 21/03/2008 20:47

Don't think that is cod btw, is an imposter...

tortoiseSHELL · 21/03/2008 20:47

See this thread

I found this link quite good for poultry suppliers all round Britain
I hope Cod sniffs the troll out and gives them laldy.

GentleOtter · 21/03/2008 20:58

Right, I did that all wrong.

great links TS, thanks!
we have had most of the breeds mentioned over the years and i suggest beginners go for a reliable hybrid for eggs (2 will keep you supplied all year round) and maybe a couple of bantams as they are such fun. if you get them at the same time they will get on ok

tortoiseSHELL · 22/03/2008 10:23

The hybrids are nice and easy aren't they ska! I love my goldlines, although they're not the most 'interesting' birds available, they are so friendly and really reliable egg wise.

ska · 22/03/2008 11:27

oh but they do have characters i think and they are so feisty

sylvev · 22/03/2008 13:37

Thanks everyone, can't wait to get some now. My dd wants a frizzle (so she can call it fizzy) but they look small and don't seem to lay many eggs. I'd rather like a speckeldy one meself, ds not bothered (teenager) and dh anxious that he now has to build a fox-proof pen!

Frizzles are tiny and cute but their size belies a slightly evil nature. The cockerels are half feather duster/ half spawn of Satan.
Silkies are much better for little ones IMO.(as a petted hen)
silkie and chick

tortoiseSHELL · 22/03/2008 21:38

I'd really like a welsummmer too!

ska · 23/03/2008 08:39

weslummers stop laying many after about a year tho. i have ruthless friends who change their hens every 18 months to get lots of eggs. we just keep them til they drop dead or get eaten by the fox. silkies make good broodies i've heard. welsummers are nice but cheeky - eat everything

sylvev · 24/03/2008 21:51

Visited a rare breeds centre today and fell in love with the bluebelles and silkies! The frizzles look weird, sort of permed!Loved the way they all came charging towards us for food. Can't wait to get some!
