mine love grapes... I give them 1 or 2 each morning. They see me and fall over themselves running over to get them.

ingles - I dont think they are supposed to eat meat? (not sure, but think that is the case)

ingles2 · 25/03/2008 17:05

probably not,...but they love it and they're very healthy

Well I guess once in a while it doesn't hurt! They do naturally forage around for slugs after all

mine get sukuma wiki - a kind of local spinach, it helps the colour of the yolks.

Chickens are omnivores and I can find lots of examples of them eating mice.

Yikes - thanks for that photo!

I suppose it is about emulating the natural diet - so yes chickens in the 'raw' allowed to roam freely will eat bugs, worms and perhaps small rodents...but unlikely to tuck into a shank of beef etc ....

I tend to avoid giving meat to mine on that basis. But sure, it's a preference thing rather than a dietary requirement

I've had a good look around for info on feeding chickens meat. I can't find anything, really and I've done Storeys Raising Chickens, chickens in your backyard and backyard chickens forum.
I do know that if you make chicken feed it should have 5% meat scraps / blood fish and bone.
So I think 1/2 pork pie twice a year is probably not going to kill them

we have never deliberately given them meat (the dog gets any leftovers from kids plates) but we do feed them slugs/snails so they must like meat. wouldn't give them chicken tho!!
