E readers . Kindle or Kobo

With another prime day heading up , I’m looking to buy a new e reader .

I have an old kindle, but I want something where the light goes “ warm” which I have read is better for before sleep . So not blue light .

I was going to just head for a kindle, but then wondered about other makes such as kobo .

I don’t want to scribble on it. My main thing is that it has a sleep night setting.

Any advice ?

Thanks

I can only answer re kindles, but the kindle Paperwhites have an adjustable warm light, but you need the Kindle Paperwhite signature edition for the auto adjusting light (adapts to the light conditions) after you have set your preferred light settings.

The Signature also has wireless charging via a separate stand.

It is currently reduced to £150 on a limited time deal. It may be reduced more on the Prime days.

As far as I know, the kindles don't emit blue light and the screens are lit in a different way to say an iPad.

Thanks.

I’ve Google’s and they aren’t blue like iPads etc, but I think there is a little blue and so the warm sleep option is good .

is it just that the signature does it auto and the non signature you need to set manually ?

You can set the setting manually to the warmth and brightness you like. The auto light adjustment would work if you went from say reading in shade to reading in sunlight, turned the light off at night etc.

Ah so the normal one would be fine then

Can you access library e books from a kindle ?

What "app" does your library liberate their ebooks to?

I've not figured out how to get library books onto a Paperwhite, but I can get Borrowbox and Cloudlibrary onto a regular Kindle Fire.

I use a kindle but I'm mostly here to find out about chicken keepers!!

Bruisername · 04/10/2023 20:30

I don’t think chickens are that fussed so either is good

EverySporkIsSacred · 04/10/2023 20:33

I use a Kobo and have a nice one which uses a warm light automatically at times I set, but it really depends where you're likely to buy any books from as Kindle/ Amazon books don't work on Kobo.
I was wondering why the post is in Chicken Keepers though!

OP posts:
MoriaRoseForever · 05/10/2023 08:42

OP posts:
MoriaRoseForever · 05/10/2023 08:43

It would be good to access library books as well as buy them .

You can download the Kobo app, or use their website, or if you can get your head around transferring files via your computer you can buy them from any site offering epub etc without the Amazon specific file extension (drm?). I've bought from Google Books and WhSmith (which is affiliated with Kobo in some way because you can use WHSmith gift cards on Kobo site) but the Kobo website or app is the easiest method, as you purchase the books then just sync the ereader and its there.

EverySporkIsSacred · 05/10/2023 08:59

They also have a thing called "overdrive" on Kobo ereaders specifically for library ebooks.

EverySporkIsSacred · 05/10/2023 09:04

Also (while I'm on a roll, LOL), you get a thread moved by reporting the thread, tick "other" and request for it to be moved. I promise it won't delete it!

I have both a kindle (new basic model) and a kobo (10 years old). I was given the kindle as a present by someone wanting to give me a few months kindle unlimited as a gift.

Once my subscription of KU expired, I'm back on my kobo almost exclusively. It feels better made and is quicker (which is mad considering it's age). I buy books from anywhere, apart from amazon. Kobo have a good store (that often price match amazon), the library downloads is great.

If your local library doesn't have overdrive, then there are some councils in the UK that will left you register for a lib card for ebooks even if you aren't in the area. Oxfordshire does for example

@MoriaRoseForever Amazon seem to be discounting Paperwhites by about £30 today. Happy shopping

PictureFrameWindow · 10/10/2023 10:02

I have a Kobo and I mostly read Adobe DRM books and PDFs in there. I like it because I can use Dropbox to pop PDFs onto it and then scribble on them and save them back to Dropbox. I use it for work mostly.
