I have recently got five silkie bantams. I love them. I’m just popping on to say hi šŸ‘‹šŸ» 🐣 x

Hi! My girls are hybrids...probably mainly Rhode Island reds but we are not really sure but they are big, fluffy and gorgeous and full of character and I love them. They are getting to be a little bit unreliable laying wise now as they are getting older but I don't care. They are part of the family and the eggs are a bonus rather than the reason for having them and we still get more than we eat anyway. I'm really hoping for bird flu to go away soon so we can let them out again because they are definitely getting a bit stir crazy in their run all this time.
Chickens are awesome - I hope you have many happy years with yours.

Hey, thank you for message. I feel exactly the same, ours lay tiny eggs, so cute, but if they don’t I wouldn’t care! I’m busy getting the field ready so they can freerange in there. When you do freerange, how do you fix proof? X

Hi. I used to free range but we had foxes coming into the garden in the day while we were out there so I stopped.

My girls are now in a big run with a skirt of chicken wire to stop badgers and foxes digging under , extra chicken wire round the outside and tarp over the top to stop wild birds getting in to share their water, which has previously resulted in me losing about 5 to bird flu ā˜¹ļø

Geneticsbunny · 11/04/2023 09:15

As far as I know we are still in bird flu lockdown so you can't free-range at the moment.

Silkies are such cuties! We have a few in with our other varieties and the silkies look like little Muppets. And such cuddly little people as well. Just be sure to keep them dry, their feathers aren't waterproof like other breeds.

thanks for the advice. I’ve actually just see they are out of flockdown hopefulyl at the end of this month. I can’t wait to see them
pottering round the field x

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername I know, they are so funny. Thanks for the advice re water; they are a bit daft and walk around in their outside run in the rain which is covered but only at the side so I will make sure I put them inside next time. X

That's a relief! I was worried they might be in all year!

Tockomtele · 11/04/2023 20:24

The lockdown is ending on the 18th, apparently.
