Do I stop it from eating my earth worms?

@Howtolivelife
You are joking, aren't you?

onedayiwillmissthis · 04/10/2021 13:32

Currently watching my hens charging around the garden catching the many, many crane flies that have appeared. Grin

When I dig over the beds it's worm time, though I do try and prevent them eating too many as my soil needs these little wriggly workers.

When the farmer is working in the fields behind we get mice, voles, etc come in and they will chase, kill and eat them too. Oh and frogs!

Why impose an unnatural diet on a creature

Butternutsqoosh · 04/10/2021 13:36

Oh my fucking god 🙈🤷🏼‍♀️

JauntyJinty · 04/10/2021 13:46

@PickAChew

Why on earth would you want to deprive them of their natural diet? That's just nuts.
No, their natural diet is far more than just nuts
Mybalconyiscracking · 04/10/2021 13:50

@FreeBritnee

In trying to train our hedgehog to be vegan on a Monday but the little prickly sod just won’t stop eating insects!!
Ours eats the nasty gloopy porridge that gathers under the seed feeders for the birds. Nicer than a lot of things that Vegans seem to think are edible..
PickAChew · 04/10/2021 14:03

jaunty 🤣

Chickens eat layers pellets, corn, egg shells, the occasional egg, kitchen waste (except chicken). The occasional drop of apple cider vinegar in their water is good for them.
Don't feed them potato peel or spoiled food.
They will also forage for bugs, worms and any other protein they can find. That is their natural diet. Everything else above, with the exception of eggs and egg shells is not really natural for them.
Please let your 'hens' eat what they like.

IpanemaPeaHen · 04/10/2021 14:19

My hens will go for my exposed toes given half the chance. I draw the line at that - cheeky buggers 🐓

katemuff · 04/10/2021 14:23

This thread is mad. How will you stop it eating worms? By caging it? So a vegan caged hen rather than a healthy free range animal living a natural lifestyle. I have seen mine tackle a mouse and many frogs if you think an earth worm is bad. Corn is very fattening and not good for them as a sole food source, they need a good balance diet, and if they free range they will ensure they get this.

Some hens eat their own eggs Hmm

@Howtolivelife

True, but my chickens are rather carnivorous, I saw one eating a snail the other day!
Sounds like an excellent part of her diet.

Do you have qualms about thrushes beating snails on paving slabs, or blackbirds pulling worms out of the lawn?Confused

I'd guess sticking to vegetarian bought food may a good idea, but fgs let your hens forage and eat naturally.

Sidehustle99 · 04/10/2021 16:23

@grey12 yes they eat their own eggs. It's a really good source of calcium for them. However best to limit it to when you want them to eat them. Also good to give them their cleaned egg shells.

Cazzovuoi · 04/10/2021 16:25

Sponsorship of a vegan lion in Africa?

RobertsRadio · 03/12/2021 12:32

Wait, it's not 1st April is it? Or have I fallen down a wormhole to a parallel universe? Or has the Op started in earnest on the Christmas liqueur chocolates?

RobertsRadio · 03/12/2021 12:33

Vegan chocolates naturally.

Howtolivelife · 03/12/2021 12:33
