hello, going to get our chickens this weekend. Breeder has asked us to let them know in advance what breeds we want and he'll have them ready as they are not doing walk around due to covid. We're getting them from Noddy's pure breeds. So now we have to decide what we want! We have an eglu go up with 2m run and walk in run connected, so about 6sqm of space in the pen. Plus have netted off a larger area of the garden which they will be in all the time when we are at home (so most days) - that's about 20sqm as well.
Thinking of getting 4 - combo of gold laced or buff orpington, buff sussex, welsummer, barnevelder. Anyone got any views on those breeds and/or the suitability of our space? We'd ideally like 4 but 3 would also be fine. Looking for friendly, not flighty and OK layers - we want them mainly as pets but eggs will be very welcome. And ideally not too noisy!

I have 3 Buff Orpingtons, only had them a couple of months. They are lovely, pretty calm, one of them seems to enjoy being cuddled although the other two are less keen but I’m hoping they’ll come round to it more. Can’t fly high so I haven’t had to clip their wings. They’re not laying yet though!

I have them in the Eglu go up with 2m and the additional 1m extension and then they free range most days. They’re pretty big so I wouldn’t want them to have much less space than that.

I’m probably too late to be helpful - sorry! But we got ours from Noddy’s Pure Breeds at the start of the year. Highly recommend! One of ours is a Barnevelder (she is stunningly beautiful and so gentle). We also have Pekins - my absolute favourites. We have 7 girls in total now - love them!

I started with 4 silkies but we unfortunately lost one. The 3 work quite well actually, they were squabbling a bit between 4. I love my girls, theyre great

I'd have as many Welsummers as you can get - we have one and although she is very elderly now, she is still a stunning hen who lays in the summer. I like Barnevelders too.
My other chickens are a Golden Legbar (she is a right arse but lays beautiful eggs), a goldentop Silkie who rarely actually lays as she is obsessed with being broody, a very elderly hybrid who currently has a look of Donald Trump due to her feathers having come back in slightly frizzy and age has made her wobbly, three Light Sussex (gorgeous), and our youngest is a Welbar and has the most wonderful floofy back end

Thanks everyone! We got our girls yesterday, a buff orpington, gold laced orpington, buff sussex and a barnevelder. They're beautiful and seem to be settling in nicely. I spent hours just watching them today.
