Re-introducing chicken after a few days away (hopefully)

I picked up some ex bats on Saturday. All was going lovely until I noticed one had a prolapsed vent 24hrs later. I have removed her from the flock as it was starting to attract unwanted attention (and I have heard about cannibalistic chickens).

She has already been to the vets (who popped it back in), but then it popped back out again, then I popped it back in again...and now it's out again (back to vets tomorrow). I am following all of the advice and guidance in the hope that it will repair. But, if it does repair (and it might be a big if), in preparation what would be the best way to reintroduce her?

I have thought of a few ways, putting her in the run before the others get up in the morning...putting her in the coop before the others go to bed...moving the run before I re-introduce her...letting them meet again whilst they free-range for the first time?

Just trying to keep myself busy whilst I'm worrying about her (I know the prognosis may not be good). She quite well in herself given that she has had a very stressful weekend and now this has happened!

TIA (bloody animals!)

Just to update, prolapsed vent eventually stayed in after about a week of TLC (cleaning it with watered down Dettol, applying Anusol and vaseline (to make sure she didn't get sore)).

I let her free range around the run for a few days, then let the others out to free range with her (fully cleaned out and moved the coop and run), then waited to see what would happen at dusk. She tried to roost in a tree, but she eventually went in with the others. She got a bit of a pecking the next morning, but nothing too bad. She has now been back with them for about 5 days (albeit at the bottom of the hierarchy).

I'm thinking of getting chickens. I didn't know there was a board for it!!! I think this is confirmation Its the right decision Grin

Sorry @Sunnydaysstillhere bad form on my part!

Here are three of them enjoying the sun (including Barbara - the one who had the prolapse, Betsy and Brenda), Beryl, the boss, was too busy digging for photos. They still look a bit rough around the edges but they have only had their freedom for 2 weeks!

Ah lovely! We had a dozen. All had names. When they sunbathe with a leg up in the air and you run out expecting the worst!
Once heard my ds chatting away and caught him showing his chicken around the house - he had him in his bedroom!! They all came in if the door was open!!
Happy Days!!

They are funny little creatures aren't they?! My son talks to them, he tells them all about his favourite computer games!

My mh was never better than when we had Ladies!!.
We were due to have had our allotment ready for some by now but due to CV it hasn't /won't be happening now.

Sorry to hear about your allotment. It’s been a shitty year for plans and still too much uncertainty to plan a great deal.

I’ve just started to grow my own veg and fruit, I wanted to know I could keep plants alive before getting the chucks. We have other pets, but chickens felt like a whole different ball game for me. I am in love with them already, all their little personalities are just starting to come out and I’m convinced a couple of them already know their names. They have also just started to make noises, I found it really sad at first that they didn’t make any noise.

Yes, yes to the mental health aspect!

I hope you can make your allotment happen somehow in the future and get your chickens.

Just saw this came up on active threads and was going to say bung her in at night when they are roosting but I can see you've succeeded! Tbh when you said prolapse I thought you prob wouldn't end up having to reintroduce her so that's a great but of work to have her sorted, well done!

Sneakyfox · 24/09/2020 14:39

Thanks @Heyha, she had me worried for while. Fair to say I think it was a baptism of fire in chicken keeping! Because of my inexperience though, I'd bought everything I might need...didn't think I'd need the first aid kit quite so quickly though! Unsurprisingly, she's quite tame now!
