Should we rehome a cockerel?

Hi, we have 3 ex- commercial hens. We have been offered a rare breed cockerel which would otherwise be culled . We live on the edge of a village. I’m thinking we could take him, but advise our neighbours what we are doing, and say that if, in a month or so, they feel he’stoo much of a nuisance, then we will re-home him.
Should I just say no to taking him? I really want to give him a chance, but am I being naive?

We had a cockerel for a long time and the hens were free range

Most neighbours liked the crowing but it wasn’t close to their houses. I think the hens preferred life without the cockerel so we didn’t replace him when a fox got him in broad daylight

Speaking as a neighbour to one, for the love of God don’t

Thanks both. I had thought the hens might benefit from living with a cockerel but it’s interesting to hear your experience gonewiththerain. I’m torn but think I’m probably going to say no...

A house a few doors Down from us had one a few years ago. Fuck me that bastard crowed all day long. Totally hated it. We do live in a town though. Not rurally

No. I grew up on a farm. The chickens were kept at the furthest part from the house. Do you know how early dawn is in the summer!!

SatanicDesk · 17/08/2020 22:22

No way - constant noise! And like pp said - in summer it’s extremely early...

I live rurally and everyone I know who has lived near a cockerel hates them.

In fact (not that I condone this at all) one chap I know got so irritated with the constant crowing that one (dawn) morning, with an extreme hangover he could bear it no more and went and shot him before going back to sleep. He remains wholly unapologetic and remorseless (he himself is from a very old farming family so is matter of fact with dealing with these things).

So be warned they can definitely invoke the rage in others!

😳 pretty unequivocal! That’s a no to the cockerel then. Really not worth annoying the neighbours.
