Position for coop

My son is on a campaign for chickens. We live on a relatively large plot in semi rural area so it's a possibility. One of the sticking points (amongst others) is working out the best position. Areas in our garden are either in shade (bit of sun in summer, but not in winter as against fence) or west facing so get sun all of afternoon - nice in winter but hot in summer. Best would be sun, under a tree but we don't have any positions like that. There are potentially other areas of more scrub, but they are further from house and veg plot so make less sense and harder work over winter. Any advice?

First option, hens can easily keep warm but struggle to cool down

Will you be letting them free range at all? If in an area with no shade you will need to put some shade on the run (for example a piece of tarpaulin) so that they can get some shade from the sun. We let ours out to a larger area when we are at home but they have a secure run attached to their house that has shade for when they are not able to have the whole of the garden at their disposal. If you have a veg plot you will need to ensure that you can keep them out of it. That said they are very good at weeding

Would a coop with run that is moveable work? Could put it in sunnier area in winter and shady area in summer. Or could put it last remaining veg bed that is currently used for raspberries (sunny) but plant a tree next to run for shade. I'm really in two minds as at the moment it's nice weather but come winter I worry it will feel like harder work.
