Help! Chicken reappeared after being missing and has now run off again!

Looking for advice on one of my lovely hens. We’ve had 5 of them for over a year and on Thursday one of them went missing in the afternoon. None of the others seemed the least bit concerned but I assumed the worst.

She reappeared today- LAZARUS! We were delighted but she seemed “off”- feathers puffed up but missing some and looking a bit bald up the inner parts of her wings, making very odd screechy noises and just behaving strangely. I thought she might be broody? I also wondered if she might have paid a visit to the cockerel who roams in the garden two doors up.

Anyway she seemed to spend a good bit of time patrolling along the fence trying to find a way out and then managed to bolt out when my DD opened the gate to the enclosure. She pelted up towards the front garden and out of sight (we have a few acres).

No sign of her anywhere!

Can anyone more experienced please give me any ray of hope?! Does that sound like broody behaviour? What are the chances of her having set up a nest for herself somewhere in the undergrowth?
How far away is that nest likely to be?
How likely is she to end up as fox food if we can’t find her with or without her nest?Sad
And when might she come to her senses and return?

Any advice or pearls of wisdom gratefully received. Poor Maisie😥

I know nothing about chickens but hope Maisie is alright. can she fly or have her wings been clipped?

Feral Chickens can and do survive though.

If her wings aren’t clipped she will probably be able to roost reasonably high in a tree / bush. Some of our chickens used to fly really quite high to roost in an old conifer, and were very safe there.

She obviously knows how to get back home, so hopefully she will be back soon.

Thank you both!

One of her wings was clipped but it had been a while and she’d managed to flap up on to a wall at least once in the meantime. We don’t have many high trees though there are a few medium ones in a neighbouring field.

No sign of her today but we’re keeping an eye out. Fingers crossed we may see her again and be able to follow her to wherever she’s hiding.

She’s a very determined lady either way so i hope that’ll help her!

Oh I hope she returns soon. Please let us know!

Mine sometimes go rogue and yes they do pull their feathers out to ‘feather the nest’. I’d look for her - search low branches, undergrowth etc. Is she a hybrid? It’s b]v unusual for them to go broody but 4 of my silkies have gone in this lovely weather.

Shes back! She just reappeared when I went out to give the others some water. She’s gobbled up some grains- no interest in fruit/greens. She’s still puffed up and making trilling noises but looks healthier than last time. No sign of her looking to get back out of the enclosure as yet.

Any thoughts on whether I should let her out and follow her if she starts patrolling the boundaries or is that just asking for trouble?!
