New feathers and bleeding

We rescued three hens a few weeks ago. Two were in very good condition with all of their feathers but one was a bit sorrier, with missing feathers on her neck and tail.

This morning I noticed that the feathers are starting to grow on the bald bits, but that they are a bit bloody.

I am a bit worried about this hen, bless her: she's not the brightest. She's definitely lowest in the pecking order. The bigger two escape from their run a lot and go off down the garden (we don't mind) but this hen stays close to the coop.

I'm hoping it's just her feathers growing in. Should I be concerned?

Watching with interest as I have the exact same problem.

Many re homed ex-battery hens have feathers missing, it looks so bad at first but they will grow back. Feather picking/self harm in crowded conditions is not nice as they can be very stressed.

Try not to pick her up as this will be uncomfortable for her, try and give her some high protein treats, feathers are made up of mostly protein, dependant on what you have been feeding them, try some boiled eggs mashed up with a little yogurt, meal worms are also full of protein, so is tuna again mixed with yogurt its easy to digest and the yogurt is good for their gut.

Also get some apple cider vinegar to put in the water, helps their immune system which will hopefully help with healing.

You can get wound care spray and powder if the bleeding is bad, but please be careful picking your girl up. Its a good idea to have a chicken first aid box.

If you feel she is being bullied try separating them for a few days.

Fingers crossed she will pick up soon!

Thanks. I've never given my hens yoghurt before! Will start now with a little bit and see how they go

All of my girls over the years have loved it!

But do step back as it can fly all over.

Just buy the basic one from Aldi etc

Well they wolfed it down so I guess I'm buying tuna every week now! (I'm veggie)

I'll report back if her feathers grow back like the others' have
