Hello all
Hoping for some words of wisdom!
I'm living in Africa so it's all very free range here, no runs, coops etc. Local hens just lay eggs wherever and whenever. Or so my gardener tells me anyway.

So one of our hens has been sitting on her eggs for I think about 20 days now. Her nest is an old sack on the floor of the garage. I'm worried because yesterday I found her on the hard concrete floor next to the sack.

I'm worried that while rolling her eggs they may have rolled on to the floor and cracked, and that it's too cold if chicks are hatching?

I know next to nothing about this but if I'm still in time to do something to help her I'd be happy to.

I'm worried about going near her as she's in a trance and she's not used to being handled...

I see half a cracked egg next to her but maybe she has the chicks under her wing?? That's what I'm hoping anyway.

Any words of advice please... I'd hate for something to happen to the chicks!
Thanks

Probably a bit early in the morning for the UK but just bumping anyway.

Be underneath her.

Have you got chick crumb? Not sure if free range SA chicks eat crumb? Probably not?

If the eggs have hatched the chicks may be up under her wing and quite well hidden. If you feed her some corn she might be interested and you should hear cheeping- they can be quite loud.

They're probably tucked under her. Make sure she's got plenty of food and water and some straw/hay to nest in - a box would be good. The trance state you describe is probably normal broody behaviour.

Because of your location predation is possible - civets, rats and other predators will take chicks so giving her a secure beating box is worth thinking about

Nesting box

Update! Yes managed to move her on to a softer surface and there is a cute live little chick!! There was only one egg so just one chick.
We have a mongoose who comes at night, so will keep them in the garage for now.
Thanks for all the replies!
