Omlet Eglu overpriced!

I have compared lots of houses now and the Omlet stuff is still about twice the price of most competitors-very in with the mums that want to boast, but really better to get a well made British house and keep your chooks mite free with anti-flea drops like you would for dogs and cats-they will have more room, be healthier and therefore live longer and lay more-Win, Win. When you power wash, you spread the mites and they just trundle back!

The Eglu runs are NOT fox proof, and the catches are the most annoying-badly made and don't fit properly. The plastic fades quickly and cannot be re-painted or stained. All in all... a big thumbs down from an experienced chicken keeper! Sad

Our was the one at the bottom of your link, the hen arc. That took 2 of us to move. The pig arc is exactly the same, just bigger. I don't think anyone's even tried to move that!

TunipTheUnconquerable · 30/09/2014 10:56

For me the ease of moving was one of the big advantages of Eglu over a wooden ark. When I first got hens dh wanted no part of it so I knew I'd have to be able to shift it a long way by myself. Some of the wooden arks have wheels and handles and I could have managed them, but those tended to be the ones that cost even more than the Eglu.

(Luckily he's converted now.)

I bought an eglu for dp for his 4th bday with 2 hens. Now (8 years later) we have 9 hens and a massive wooden house with a huge run and all the trimmings. The hens choose to go and sit in the eglu tho. 5 at a time often. They tend to lay in it too. I suspect we have poncey chickens with illusions of grandeur and expensive tastes!! Although having said that the eglu is a little faded but it is still in perfect working order and is easier to clean dp thinks.

(I remain very suspicious of chickens and am convinced when they get in the house they are doing so to try and murder me....I thought I'd grow to love them. I do love the eggs but remain scared of what lays them! Dp bloody loves them tho and dd has named them all and knows their quirks and is convinced they love her like she's their mum)

I've had my Eglu since it came out in 2003, that's 11 years.

I've had no issues at all, ever. It has barely faded in the sun.

Never had any mites or fleas or issues.

Ruhrpott · 30/09/2014 11:07

I love my eglu too. No mites, no foxes and got it from 10 miles away second hand for 120 off ebay. Think the woman who sold it as a buy it now didn't realise what they normally go for in auctions. My four silkies love it and it's really easy to clean out.

thereinmadnesslies · 30/09/2014 19:17

Re foxes - we lost a hen to a fox when we had the wooden coop. The bastard fox managed to rip open the base of the nesting box. We've not had a fox attack since getting the cube, but I don't think any coop could be 100% fox proof. We've put the run on paving slabs which is supposed to make it harder for a fox to tunnel into the run, and everything is pegged down.

EssexMummy123 · 11/10/2014 21:05

Love my cube - very well made and easy to clean. I also have an old wooden henhouse that i use if i need to split them up e.g if i'm introducing new hens and i would go for the eglu cube every time.

Re the fox - there are plenty of threads about this already but i honestly think if you close the door of the eglu henhouse at night then it's fox-proof, if you only close the door to the run then it's fox resistant but not fox proof to a determined fox. However if you put some steel mesh underneath and electric poultry netting around it then it's fine.

EssexMummy123 · 11/10/2014 21:07

Does the OP sell wooden henhouses by any chance?

Aridane · 11/10/2014 22:47

Love my eglu!

Owllady · 15/10/2014 12:42

I don't have an evil but I have a British made wooden coop and run(arf) and I put mine on a concrete block to stop the foxes/rats getting in
I power wash, use mite kill and ardap spray as well as de in the bedding (and dusting the chickens) and can honestly say it's got rid of my mite problem altogether. Which is nice
I looked at the evil cube but no way could I justify it when you compare it to something like this
www.thechickenhousecompany.co.uk/product_info.php/cPath/22_23/products_id/53
And no, I don't work for them. I wish I did as I could do with a new house (for me and the chickens)

Owllady · 15/10/2014 12:43

Sorry the kindle changed eglu to evil !

rhetorician · 15/10/2014 12:49

we have one of these really great hen house

CuddyMum · 16/10/2014 10:26

Happy with my second hand Eglu so far.

mindingalongtime · 16/10/2014 11:03

I've had my pink cube for over 7 years, okay a a little bit faded on the roof, but it is in sunlight. I have a walk in wooden aviary attached to it. It is so easy to jet wash and it is a very satisfying job when all clean and sweet smelling.

I have had 8 chooks quite happily in it, now only 5, and they seem a bit lost in it, lots of space to roost, but they all pile up on top of each other!

I have had red mite, but managed to get rid of it in a few days, but a friend with a wooden coop has had a major battle for months.
