First time hatching chicks, but i have a very broody hen and ebay tempted me with 6 cream crested legbar eggs. Fingers crossed for more girls than boys :-)

Thanks, I like them too.

Any sign of the chicks hatching? I looked again last night with the torch and one of ours now has a crack in and seems to be just one mass inside. One is not developing at all and one you can now clearly see the embryo moving around in. So looks like we have just one still viable egg and still two chickens firmly sitting on the eggs.

Well we gave up at the end of day 25, underneath her was only 3 eggs - looks like the other 3 had broke and she ate them (which makes me question her mothering abilities) so, she's back out with the others and she still seems to be at the bottom of the pecking order.

If i get another broody then i will try and find some local hatching eggs.

Sorry to hear that you got no chicks. I gave up on the cracked egg and when I cracked it open into a glass there was only a runny yellow liquid that smelled awful. I put another not fertilised egg in its place for the hens to sit on. We now definitely only have one egg that is developing and you can see movement in it when you shine a torch through. Both chickens are still sitting on the eggs, so if it hatches I have no idea who will be Mum and I'll have one lonely chick.

If I ever do this again I will get 6 eggs as the failure rate is so high.

Any news Ruhrpott?

Not hatched yet, due Wed or Thurs. Is the day you put it under the hen one or day zero? I just put the remaining egg in a glass of water and it moved by itself so the chick is still alive. I am just looking at where to buy chick crumb. Looks like pets at home do a 5 kg bag.

Ruhrpott · 22/06/2014 20:55

I put it under the hen Wed 4th June about 4pm. So when should it hatch? Still got two hens sitting on it and the third one in with them.

Ruhrpott · 24/06/2014 08:14

Now the third one is sitting on there too. Poor chick, if it ever hatches will be squashed to death.

There are cheeping noises coming from the egg

Ruhrpott · 25/06/2014 17:14

It's hatched

Further update, it started crowing last week. Not sure what I'm going to do now. I'm having lunch with some of the neighbours on Friday, I'll see if any comment on it!
