Help! Two abandoned chicks - how do I care for them?

I found two abandoned chicks in the middle of the road whilst driving home. I waited ages to see if their mum would turn up but she didn't so Ihave take them home. I really hope I've done the right thing. I have absolutely no idea what to do with them now though. Please help!

Take them back and put them in the grass verge. You shouldn't have taken them. The mother was there somewhere, probably terrified of you.

Oh no, really? They were in the middle of a main road and I stopped because they were going to be run over by a car coming the other way. I'll take them right back if people think that's best.

I really would return them, you did the right thing by stopping but I'm sure the mother is calling to them.

Er wait a minute. Do you mean chicks as in baby chickens (with this being chicken keeping topic) or wild bird chicks?

Well she might be but she's probably abandoned them. What sort of chicks? You mean chickens? Put them in a small cardboard box with a lightbulb over the top to keep them warm. You'll need chick crumbs from a pet shop, tomorrow obviously, or failing that some breadcrumbs as an emergency, and a small dish of water. Lots of newspaper to sit on as they'll poo everywhere.

I do mean baby chicken. There are wild chicken all over the place where I live at the moment. They seemed very much abandoned. I've put them in a cardboard box under a lamp for the time being. Obviously I'll take them straight back if that's for the best but I'm not sure they'd last long...

Are they fluffy and long-legged? If so I suspect they may be pheasant chicks. They are crap parents and the chicks are thick as a brick. You can successfully hand-rear them though. You can use a hot water bottle if you haven't a handy lamp. Obviously you'll have to change the water every few hours. They can be reared on crumbs or corn and water but chick crumb would be better.
