Egg size

Do individual chickens lay different sized eggs just because that's what they do? ie some just lay big eggs and others just tend to lay smaller ones?

We mostly get nice large eggs, but at least one of the girls lays noticeably smaller ones, and the small eggs often have thinner shells as well. Is this a sign that she isn't doing as well, or just one of those things?

They're all about 18 months old as far as I know, and I know we're lucky they're still laying this late in the year - its all down to the way 3yr old DS thanks them when he finds an egg Grin

Sorry if I'm sounding like a panicky first time mum!

the first few eggs that they lay tend to be smaller and sometimes have no shell on. once they are laying well they tend to be the size that they are. we have a big mix of chickens some laying eggs twice the size of others. watch out for changes is the main thing though at this time of year as light levels go down they will stop laying (or at least ours do)

Here is a useless fact: each hen will always produce the same amount of shell per egg. Normally this means larger eggs then have thinner shells so cannot be sold in shops. These eggs are sold to manufacturers of cakes etc.

You will get to know your hens over time. Keep an eye on the one laying the smaller eggs. Is she younger? Feeding ok? I am no expert, haven't had hens for years but I do know they are sturdier than you think!

Thank you Ghost, I like useless information :)
And the idea of sturdy hens.

We've only had 1 shell-less egg, which confused me! As far as I know they were all laying before we rehomed them, and they seem happy enough now, I'll keep an eye out for any changes but not worry till I see anything to worry about - then I'll be back here!

Ours are the same, all laying different sized eggs (they are the same age/breed). I wouldn't have a clue who was laying the small one though, how do people know which ones are laying when they are all in the coop together?

Beats me Pixel!
