Dog picked up chicken, how do I make her better?

Long story but my friends dog who's young and doesn't yet have all her training 100% managed to get one if my chickens today, (retriever so she carried her away) we're both upset it happened - but I'm not sure what to do this evening/tonight. I took her to the vet as there was less damage than i expected and no blood. She has a puncture wound which vet has cleaned, put antibiotic in and glued up. They said put her back with the others which I have done, but she's not really moving and when she does she's a bit wobbly. Should I bring her in in a crate so she has food/water? Then obviously will have the re-introductions to do when I put her back? Or leave her and just see if she survives? If I thought there was no chance I'd have taken her to the farmer 3 doors down to put her out of any pain but she didn't look too bad and the vet didn't suggest I should. Any help please

I would leave her alone. She's still shocked and will be better with the others....the bother of moving again might upset her more. See how she looks tomorrow and if she's not better, then move her to a crate with food and water. It was only today she got hurt so she's still shocked I expect.

Thanks neo, she's still wobbly this morning so I've crated her with cat food and water that she has tucked into. I'll put the crate in the run later.

Good plan. One of mine had a freak accident and ended up upside down in the run dangling from a perch. We crated her for a couple of days and she was find and back in with the others afterwards.

She laid me an egg today, bless and has eaten but is still a bit lopsided

its shock. they are sensitive things and she will either recover or she wont I am afraid. you are doing the best thing by leaving her in familiar surroundings. just keep checking on her more regularly than you usually do because sometimes they struggle to eat and drink (and egg laying is something they often do after a shock as well) good luck

She's eating cat food and has tonic but I'm going to feed her as she's not moving much but she look alert and more relaxed so after 2 nights I'm hoping she will pull through. I thought the egg may well have already been in her system so she would have had no choice but to let it out. Tomorrow I'll encourage her to move round more, she is the tamest one (which is why she had come out of the gate to come to me when it happened!)

My labrador picked up two of my bantams once (not at the same time) but thankfully didn't cause any puncture wounds (she's soft mouthed obviously and is trained as a gundog so will naturally carry birds - wondering if a gundog and chooks are a good mix now but hey ho) - the hen was quiet for a while but she soon came around and became incredibly friendly again, no permanent harm done. I hope it's the same for yours.

So do I, its her leg I'm concerned about she's not holding it right. The puncture wound is fine so far. I'm wondering whether to take her back to the vet and see if it needs a splint. She must have been pounced on before she was picked up. When I took her straight away it was the flesh wounds I pointed out not her leg (wasn't obvious at the time) she's moving her feet but not putting that leg down and holding it funny, when I looked at her leg it looks intact so to speak Sad

She's back with the others, no settling back in issues
And no pecking! she's got a limp but she gets around with them all and is eating, drinking and going to bed fine. Laid another egg but it was one of those jelly ones with no real shell (shock and eating cat food would probably do that) really pleased Smile
