Thinking of upgrading Omlet eglu go to Cube... is it worth it?

Wondering whether the extra expense is worth it and if anyone can give me any feedback on their Eglu Cube.

The main thing is the ability to move it more easily. I cant drag my Go around the garden but DH can. The temptation of the wheels is a big thing... am I deluded?!!

Thanks all.

I love my cube, worth every pound IMO, but I upgraded from Wooden housing. But I have found it isn't as easy to move as I thought, I have and extra metre added, so that might make it harder. But the chooks love the extra space. If you do upgrade, wait until try have a freebe, I got the fencing free a few months ago (worth £100)

I have a cube. I got it with the first chicken so haven't had anything else.
It is good, easy to clean and shut and open the door
Mine are free range a lot now as we have fenced off some garden, but I have quite a large run extension if we go away and they need to stay in.

I would say that we only have 4 ex-batts and the bed area looks very full if they are all in there. It says it can house up to 10, but that would be a squash IMO, even with smaller breeds

We have a wooden house at the moment and we've had red mites in Sad poor chooks!! Regular cleaning etc, but now extra vigilant and they seem to be going.

Do u get mites in the cubes/go housing?

Our hen house is beginning to show its age and we're considering a new house. The cube etc are really expensive - are they really worth it?

Mhysa · 18/07/2013 13:57

Raspberrys I had a nightmare with redmites last winter, lost 2 silkies we hatched to them Sad. Thy are mite resistant, but it's not impossible to get them. But considering how bad our problem was, not had a problem in the cube or eglu Smile (got them in jan)and if you were unlucky, the fact that you can expose every crevice to treatment and sun, means you can treat affectively, un like the wooden housing.

Would defiantly say worth every penny

In terms of red mite, eglus are fantastic. The cube is massive, but not easy to move. we found a fixed site was better with a big run. Try to get a full height run if you can, it was a pig cleaning out the smaller ones, bring on the backache.

I house 8 bantams in one of the small Eglus. Never had a problem with mites as they like crevices to hide in and there aren't any in an Eglu, plus it gets pressure washed once a week.

I got some chickens off a man who hated the Cube and the Go because he thought wooden was best and the Cube leaves the chickens quite exposed. He sold wooden coops so this may have been a factor!

However the real hatred was reserved for the Go and the Classic because the chickens don't get to perch in a way that is natural for them. This (according to him) can lead to peritonitis as the egg gets stuck.

I have a Cube and am happy with it. I cover it with a plastic rain cover in the winter and provide a wind break. I have also out a large log in there so that they can perch during the day.

I can move it on my own if I have to - another plus.

Now we've started getting some problems with red mite in our wooden coop I'm slightly hankering towards something plastic but I don't really like the design of them or the price! I just can't justify spending hundreds of pounds on a coop for three hens, it will be worth more than my car Wink.
If I did have the money I wouldn't mind one of these as they have proper perches inside and look nice and easy to clean and move about and they look pretty. The one that goes on the fence is a clever idea.

the Chicube looks as if it would last a long time and be practical but it's just so small! I especially like the fact that it's fully insulted Grin.

I love my cube, I dont move it though have set it up permanently in one place as we only have a small garden and bits werent recovering quick enough when we moved it around, never found any problems moving it though. just c;eaned it out takes 10 mins.
