HELP! Eggs due to hatch

Idratherbeknitting · 12/06/2013 20:10

Please help, we need advice asap.
We have five eggs which have been under our super broody hen for 20 days.
But, today got home from work and she was crawling with mites, all her nest and bedding, all over the eggs. She was off her eggs, and they were scattered about. I think they've been driving her crazy. Her comb is pale, so I'm guessing she's anaemic too.
So, hen has been thoroughly dusted, and we've put her back in with the other hens (treated them too).
All sawdust done, and mini coop fully dusted.
Here's the issue, the eggs are due to hatch in the next 2 days, but what do we do with them?
At the moment they are in a box in the lizard's viv, which sounds crazy, but it's the right temp - clearly they can't stay in there. Lizard is far to small to eat eggs or contents btw.
Advice gratefully received.

very quickly you need to buy a heat lamp, some chick crumb and a chick water feeder. get a large sided card board box, suspend the heat lamp over it very low down and put the food and water in. when they hatch leave for 24 until dry then transfer them into the box. if they are huddled under the heat they are too cold if on the edge of it too warm. line the box with paper and change every day. once they start flying you will need to put net on the top of the box and also move the lamp up every day. go onto amazon now and order yourself a book super quick so you know what you are doing. new hatch chicks are v v fragile. you have to help them to drink and feed once transferred and you can only do this if you have the info. good luck pm me if needed.

arggh just realised lizard is in with them. not a good idea. can someone else look after it for you for a few days?

Lizards might hurt the chiks.

OP - whats happening would like to know the outcome!

Hi,
Thanks so much for replying.
We moved the eggs into a spare snake box (too many pets here), with a heat mat set to 37deg under it the next morning, and we have our fingers crossed that they hatch tomorrow.
We will get all the other bits ready if the eggs do hatch (I'm so worried in case they got too cold before), and we have a large shed with plenty of warm dry space to raise chicks in if they do.
The lizard is 5" long, and 3 of that is tail, so he couldn't have hurt the eggs, but we had them in a vented box anyway- just couldn't think what else to do at the time!
They are lavender araucana's, we have a small flock of ex-bats and rare breeds, so were really hopeful that we'd get some girls to add to our flock. Our brahma Lynskey did such a good job sitting, it would be awful to let the eggs down now.
I'll let you know if they hatch. Fingers crossed.

Any news?

ditavonteesed · 15/06/2013 12:48

good luck

Got up this morning, and one of the eggs was cheeping!!
I'm so excited to get in from work to see if anything has happened.

But only one. We shall see if any of the others do anything, but one is great. I'm all ready with heat lamp etc, and we have found a nice place near us that breeds day old chicks, so we are going to get a few more so it's not on it's own!

We've had 2 chicks this year which our light sussex bantam is rearing (will not let us near her), they are x-appernzella (our only cockerel), so should be quite funny looking!

Just to round off, they didn't hatch Sad

Too much messing about I think.
One totally non starter (duff egg?)
Three developed with air sacs but at day 24 clearly no sign of hatching,
and sadly the one that was chirping, stopped, then stopped scuffling, then nothing. DP opened it last night, as it was clearly dead, and it's innards were all outside it's little body. So very sad.

Flip side is we got 6 day-old chicks from a local breeder on saturday (so our lone chick we thought would hatch wouldn't be on it's own), and they are doing brilliantly in the brooder (thanks for all the advice), we made one from a spare lizard light, and big box, in the spare room, so nice and quiet (and away from the cat, and small DD's).

I've listed all my surplus baby stuff on ebay, and will hopefully get enough to buy an incubator, and we'll have another go.

Sad hatching is so hard.

mummymeister · 17/06/2013 19:05

We have a brinsea incubator. put the eggs in , top up the water reservoir and keep topping it up and wait 21 days hey presto chicks every time. it does all the temp, humidity and turning and it is our best ever buy. 7 egg size is big enough for us. you might want to look into this OP so you can do your own eggs next time. you did your very best for them but as dita says it is a really hard thing to get right and any temp or humidity drop in the last two days messes it up. now go and enjoy your 6 new fluffies!!

ditavonteesed · 18/06/2013 08:16

is the brinsea eally that good, I did my hatch undder a broody and still only got 3 out of the 8 I out in. thinking we may do another hatch next year but since the cats moved out I could do it in the house this time.

Idratherbeknitting · 19/06/2013 12:47

We're looking at a brinsea, the little one which is all automatic.
My fluffies are ace, we're one Road Island Red (Huge!), two whitw bantam silkies, a welsommer and two wyandottes bantams.
They're so cute, growing fast, and getting their wing feathers now.
