quails?

So, blokie is unmoveable on the chooks front.

Nope, no, no way, never.

But, we've got four wee budgies as pets for the kids - and, that got me thinking...a wee aviary in the garden for half a dozen budgies and quails on the bottom?

They are wee egg laying machines, will eat up the fallen seed and so keep down a rat risk. They are cute, and quiet. I think they are prone to a bit of viscious hen pecking, but I'd cope with that.

Anyone keep quails?

Would love to do the same - design ideas?

Have kept quails before - murder and eye pecking nasty, but thought that might be because they were in a small cage inside.

I had two avairys with 2 quails in each, no fighting ever and yes a great deterent to pests as they eat fallen seed.

The eggs are wonderful with venison

Non toxic live branches are good for all of them too. With the budgies the difference in branch thickness exercises their feet and leafy ones for the quails provide shelter. It looks pretty aswell.

Hope you get some.

thanks, guys...as an up - have come into a little bit of cash!

Squee!

There aren't many people selling aviaries - and, DH would not appreciate my heath robinson joinery skills in the garden. But, I've found a bloke on ebay:

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BIRD-AVIARY-FLIGHT-HOUSING-UK-DELIVERY-AVAILABLE-/200794326441?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Birds&hash=item2ec04645a9

but, I'd need shiplap round the base for shelter for the quails and some sort of box for them to hide in on the bottom? And, I'd want one side of the avairy to be covered for shelter from the worst of the weather.

Required: safety porch, shiplap round base, night shelter.

What I'd really like is something like this:
www.aviaryaccessories.co.uk/outdoor.htm - the first one with a shed so I can hide away in there for hours with wee birdies and no kids...perhaps one day, when we have a big huge garden. Sigh.

Grin you would need a shed shelter.

Do you have a local carpenter you could get quotes from? might be cheaper.

I would go for one attached to the house with access indoors for them but that would be £££. The hexagonal one on the 2nd link was nice and would look good in the middle of a garden, on all of them though you'd need a quail shelter.

Thanks, Natural.

That's a great idea about the carpenter - I've been a bit frustrated at how none fo them have a pop hole for quails and few have safety porches...I do not much fancy trying to catch escaped budgies!

I'd like the £££ option - blokie thinks it's ugly. But, it's a compromise - we currently have 4 budgies in the house which he finds noisy. And, I want chickens ...so, I'm compromising A Lot.

What do you keep in your aviaries? Just quails, or other delights too?

I don't have them anymore but did have budgies, finches and quails and yes double doors are a must.

Sorry he won't let you have chickens, on that front I've had chickens, pheasants, geese, ducks and a turkey.

And Doves.

Anyway Grin a converted garden shed works quite well and are secure against foxes horrible if they get in and provide a store area.

Ask around locally, people usually like to show off talk aviary and might know good places/trades to go too.

Get a few quotes first.
