Hi, I put my eggs in the incy last night around 7, went to turn them this morning, on one has this reddy brown stuff oozing through the shell, I removed it straight away. Was I right to remove? And can any one they'll me what it is/happened? tyia

Have you candled the eggs at all? I put a card board box over a lamp with a 50p sized hole cut out of the box to check them all over. You can see if they are growing correctly, we had a Katie Thear book on hatching and inc'ing and had some good photos to refer to.

are there cracks that it is oozing from

and was it the first day of inc'ing?

Onadietcolabreak · 20/07/2012 11:25

I did candle the eggs before putting in the incy, no cracks or anything noticeable (although, my 1st hatch, so I'm no expert)

No cracks that I can see, it's like it's coming though the shell, as if it has pores Confused yeah, first day.

Another one has started to leak now, they were very dirty eggs when they arrived (via eBay) so I discarded the very dirty ones. Only have two left now, the children are going to be so upset when they get home Sad

I last hatched eggs circa 1974 at school, but just to say, eggs are porous, if that helps any? Don't recall any red ooze, though. :(

Onadietcolabreak · 20/07/2012 11:34

Thanks, I thought so.

I have posted on a chicken site, and have been told they are prob, very old and rotten, or partially incubated before.

I very upset as this was the kids summer hol project Angry

Start again? Yuck at the thought of keeping "partially incubated" chicks in the warm... :(

Onadietcolabreak · 20/07/2012 12:45

Contacted seller, he said he will replace them when he cycle is finished, I'm not happy with keeping the others tbh, I'm hovering over it waiting for the others to turn! I can't see the others hatching, cue 3 stroppy kids later.

is there somewhere near by you could buy eggs from, they are notoriously bad from ebay etc. much ebtter to buy them in erson.

Onadietcolabreak · 21/07/2012 12:04

Not sure, will look into it, I'm fighting for a refund but the seller has accused me of falsifying the whole thing, even the photographic evidence I have.

Think this is a case of lesson learnt!

it can be mixed thing with eBay. I had some lovely eggs off eBay, but let our broody's hatch them, all hatched 2 hens 4 cocks. My cousin had bought a batch from someone else and they did the same as onadietcolabreak

have you done a local search where you could collect the eggs? I bought some a couple of years ago at a local agricultural show. I bought a mixed lot of eggs and they were 5 good with 4 hens, the last must have been a later egg as he hatched 10 days later but was much smaller and didn't make it.

Onadietcolabreak · 23/07/2012 20:34

I have been offered some replacement eggs from a kind heart on a chicken forum :)
kellestar did your cousin have the weeping/ ozzing thing happen? If so that's interesting, as I'm fighting to get my money back, and the seller claims in his '50 plus years experience, he has never herd of such a thing happening!' ergo, I'm lying!
Did your cousin complain?
I have 6 silkie eggs still in there from a separete seller, but they might not hatch as the weeping can bacterially infect the good eggs, but im not giving up hope!

Kellestar, most broods give you morecocks than hens, whatever the source ..

Hennycluckington · 05/08/2012 19:44

Sounds like bacterial infection probably due to them being dirty eggs, the bacteria will pass through the porous surface into the egg and they have no chance. It only takes a bit of good husbandry - ie they collect their eggs more frequently, keep nesting boxes clean, lots of straw at the entrance to the nesting boxes to remove most of the dirt off the hens feet. It's disgusting what some eBay sellers will send through the post.
We have both sold and received egg off eBay and do far do good but heard plenty of stories about terrible hatching rates.

25chickens · 12/09/2012 10:40

We've bought eggs from ebay and they've been fine. I guess you found a bad seller. If you paid for them via paypal ,open a case against the seller for the item not being as advertised. You'll likely get your money back, paypal tend to favour the buyer
