Have any of your chickens died from fighting each other? :(

Just that really :(

New chicken is dead :(
She was the biggest, so this was unexpected.

Not sure why she is dead. They fought when put together last night, but were absolutely fine this morning, otherwise I would have separated them again.

I'm no expert on whether they die following fighting but I have certainly had two just die for no apparent reason. One minute fine, next morning dead. Sad

Chickens do have a habit of just dying. A move and the stress relating to that can bring out ailments and illnesses as the chickens defences are weakened (so to speak).

Were there any signs of wheezes and sneezing beforehand or a bubbly eyes?

I'm so gutted :(

She had laid an egg but it was bloody, and as I'm not sure of her health I have thrown it out. It was her first egg for us :(

Feel a bit sick and shocked

There were no signs of ill health at all, she seemed very robust indeed!

A grisly question: would the fact that the other chicken was pecking at her when she was dead be an indicator?

Was she pecking at her bum?

maristella · 02/05/2012 18:43

yes... what would that mean?

It sounds like she had a prolapse when passing the big egg. If you were able to get the prolapse quickly you may have been able to pop it back in - but it's just as likely that you wouldn't have got it back in and the end result would have been the same.

I don't mean to be morbid either, but how have you disposed of the chicken?

maristella · 02/05/2012 18:58

That is a relief to hear that it might not have been a direct result of pecking order fighting.

Prolapse sounds horrible for her :(

She was at a funny angle and her legs looked like they had buckled.

I have put her into 2 black bin liners, that is right isn't it?

Yep, that's the way. There nothing worse then finding one that you've buried, dug up agin by morning.
There's nothing dignified in a wheelie bin/baggy burial but it doesn't attract the foxes.

Good, thank you.

What a day!
