My poor hen was attacked by a dog which got into the garden yesterday evening...luckily she survived, but he chased her around for a couple of minutes before my husband was alerted to what was happening and stepped in to save her. She literally has no tail whatsoever left, and has quite a deep (but clean) a puncture wound where she was bitten in her rump. I put her in a box with blankets overnight and kept her warm in the house and she looks quite bright this morning- and has even laid an egg!!! What a superchook! I'm going to bring her to the vet this morning to get checked out, but has anyone any experience of this happening to their hen? Did they do ok afterwards and do the feathers take long to grow back? What extra care did you give them in the meantime while they were recovering? Can she rejoin the other three in her run? I'm also wondering what the psychological effects will be, as she may well be terrified of it happening again...but I want to give her a chance for now and see how she gets on.
I'd really appreciate any advice as this has never happened me before (and I hope it never will again).

Sorry no advice, just want to say hope she's ok, I found when one of mine got a cut above her beak ( no idea how) the others pecked at it continually, some one told me they are attracted to the red of the blood, not sure if that's true as there combs are red Confused hope the dog doesnnt return. That's my fear of mine going over next door fence as they have a massive dog.

You'll have been to the vet by now but this is what I've done when mine have been attacked by foxes/dogs.

Clean wound and pack with wound powder.
Any bald spots get a blast of gentian violet which stops the pecking.
Tonic in either the water/food
I would put her back with the others provided they don't start pecking.
Feed catfood/egg

How rude am I? I hope that your brave girl is doing well Smile

The same thing happened to my beautiful Maran chick, Clarissa, made worse by the ridiculous pompous arrogant bitch woman who had the dog off the lead even though the signs across the land I live on tell walkers to keep their dogs on a lead. Anyway I digress, she lost some of her tail too, and laid flat out like a pancake in fear. But after a night of tcl she was fine, she is a shy bird though.

I had no idea there was a chicken keepers section here, so pleased I've found it although through nasty circumstances, I do hope she is OK now.

BTW MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe, lovely name, I didn't know they liked catfood, made a note of that one, thank you.

Thanks Sarah Smile it's my Christmas name!

Catfood/dogfood is very good for poorly chooks because it contains so much protein. They also love it!
