Chicken keepers

Urgent advice needed.

We have a newly hatched Pekin chick that has been abandoned in the coop, and looks as if it has been attacked. We have brought it inside to warm it up - not looking hopeful, is there anything we can do?

Any advice appreciated.

Thankyou

Warm it up/dry it with a hairdryer - it needs to fluff up to keep warm. Have you got an airing cupboard or an incubator that it could go in? If not, a heat pad?

Has the hen hatched out the other chicks and is she OK with them? If she has, put it back under her - they can't count.

It needs to be kept warm first and foremost. Do you have any kind of portable light fitting eg a lamp with at least a 60 watt bulb that you can suspend over a box? The chick can huddle under this to keep warm. Do you have any other healthy chicks? I would perhaps consider bringing one or two in to help keep the poorly chick warm, but supervise closely if the chick has any open wounds.

My friend has in the past used an angle poise lamp over a shoe box with wood shavings in. I also watched her girls fluff chicks up in front of a halogen heater, not a blowy one.
Poor little chick.

if it looks that you will have to raise it then you will need to get yourself an infrared light (farm shops, ebay, google). Normal light can cause bone deformation, it needs to be infrared. I found that when chicks are very little it is easiest just to put them in cardboard box with few sheets of newspaper, give it a shallow bowl with water (they drown easily) and dip its beak in so it knows where to find it. Also get babychick feed (fine powdery stuff). Hopefully it perks up soon. Good luck.
