one of my chooks had a prolapse on thursday, it wasnt particulARLY BIG SO WE SEPERATED HER FROM THE OTHERS and have been bringing her in at night, It looked like it was ok, let her out this morning and she has obviously tried to lay an egg, the prolapse nis huge, dh is going out to sort her out in a minute, feel really sad, she is one of the first chooks I got, she is about 4 years old and has had a good life but it is horrible when they die like this. I love my chooks so much but they are very badly designed animals.
she hasnt been laying for well over a year so I dont know why she started again, if she hadnt started laying again she woulld be fine.

I am so sorry. One of mine had a prolapse last year. I nursed her and with cream and care, the prolapse went back in and she was OK for a short while. But she later died - probably of a related infection. She had never been very good at laying corrrectly shaped eggs and I felt like you for a while - I even hated the eggs. Apparently there are (enormously expensive) hormone injections you can give them to stop the laying.

I am so sorry about Dotty. I still miss all my little characters and we generally plant something in the garden to remember them. 4 years is an incredible age. Give the others a hug and get your husband to give you a hug too.

thanks I know I am soppy, just made the mistake of clicking on a thread about free range eggs. there is a picture on my profile of one of dottys eggs, think there might be a reason her insides were a bit of a mess, i lost another chook to prolapse last year, she was an ex batt and not very old at all. last couple of days she has had the garden all to herself, and has doen some really good chickeny destruction of the flower beds, so at least she was happy.

You are not soppy. To take on ex-bats, you are lovely. It is a fine thing to give them such a gorgeous life.

Sometimes - their inner engineering is just not right. It cannot be helped.
