we have had them for nearly two weeks now and they get handlied strokes watched everyday we let them out sunday they started flapping after a while so i put them back (worried they'ed fly off or jump on to fence and into next doors) i let them out yesterday for a while i had the back door open and kept checking them(tis like ahving six more kids) and a again to day whilst dc's and i were getting dressed(can see them from upstairs windows) and then we went outside with them.
Im just petrified of losing them i did catch daisy on the run roof which would have meant had she thought about it she probably could have jumped onto the neigbours fence and into there garden (they have dogs) we have a six foot fence aroung the garden but on one side our nighbours only have a 5 foot one.
Any words of advice or wisdom would be greatly recieved

you need a very tall fence to keep a chicken in, especially if hey have a higher launchpad. Ours have sometimes got over a 5'6" fence, by getting on the roof of the coop first. You could clip their wings? Or only let them out when you're actually inthe garden?

wings are clipped srry should have mentioned that. I was planning on only letting them out when we are home anyway but i would reallly like to let them out and not have to be in tha garden all the time (asking too much?)

only let them out when you're in the garden.
It's not them escaping you should be worried about, it's them being taken off by a fox.

although, the dog next door might be a worry.

Seriosuly with the fox - we lost one our brand new hens to a fox - it was just before twilight and we went into the house to make dinner.
a fox attacked her while we were gone (and we were both popping out every 5 mins or so)

you should always make sure you are within running distance of the hens when they are out and about.

Mine get out of their run and could therefore get out of the garden if they wanted to. They get out of the run most days actually over the 5ft fence even with their wings clipped. But they never leave the garden, they're quite happy scratching about on the lawn. To be honest I think they only bother coming out the run if they've run out of food or water. So its a good way of telling me to get my ass outside and sort them out. Blush

I think you'll find that they won't wander.
