Just looking through the eglu website and it costs £15 for 2hours. Or maybe you can learn just as well through a book?

I did cos I like to be told. Didn't say that much more than a book, but you get to have someone show you on an actual chook, and try things yourself. I found it comforting to see how at ease they were when I was feeling stressed.

Just a couple of things that I would urge you to do is to worm them regularly - use Flubenvet NOT Verm-X as this doesn't actually kill the worms. Worms can cause all kinds of problems for chickens and even kill them. Worm them regularly and at the first sign of any health problems or soft shelled eggs.

Also, watch out for external parasites - lice and things. You can use ivermectin drops or spray to deal with these - get it from your vet.

I lost two of my new chickens due to them being infested when I got them from a scruffy breeder - I didn't know what the problem was due to being new to it all and it was a steep learning curve for me.

You could just read a book. Although £7.50 an hour for an enjoyable outing is probably not excessive, so if it's fun ... I wish I had thought of the whole eglu concept!

It is a very good thing - you get cake, chicken chat and get to see the real thing and ask endless questions. Nothing like seeing and doing to learn quickly!

Punkatheart · 30/01/2011 19:08

Cake?

Why didn't you say!

I would have loved to have done it three years ago - when I began chickenkeeping.

Learning to handle your chickens - most people do it wrong and get a wing in their face!

AliceWorld · 30/01/2011 20:27

I've been twice and never had cake!

southeastastra · 30/01/2011 20:28

a course? can't you just ask on here Grin

brambleschooks · 30/01/2011 20:52

A choice of cake at 'ones local to me' ;) and a choice of chickens to cuddle.

Most definitely and join the omlet forum too as there is loads of advice. I went on a course and also obtained lots of info from the forum members. Brambles are you the same brambles on the other forum?

I got mine before the courses started but I think I would have gone on one if they had.
I'm bronze on there too
