im dying for chickens and would love to get some for my birthday(im the big 3-0 in a month)
My garden isnt the biggest but my mil has a big garden with a slabbed area and some grass.
she lives five minutes from me and i was thinking about asking her if i could keep chickens in her garden.

She has mentioned in the past that she likes chickens and always wanted some.

But the only thing i can think that could throw a spanner in the works is the noise factor. Are they very noisy, she is quite a light sleeper and if they were really noisy she might object. I just wanted to be armed with the facts before i asked her.
Thanks

Hens are almost silent! You don't need a cockerel so should be fine. The only time my hens make a noise is when one has just laid but even then they arent all vocal.

Good luck

I have chickens and a cockerel.

The hens are silent except for very very faint clucking at night and the occassional sqauck if they are startled.

The cockerel is a whole other story. Dont get one. Your neighbours may even make a formal complaint about noise nuisance.

Cockerels are a no, unless you live on a farm or don't have neighbours!!
Hens can be noisy when they lay an egg but otherwise I think the low clucking noises are quite a nice sound. They are silent at night as they go into a very deep sleep. They do wake at first light but you could fool them by excluding the light until later, although they won't be that noisy anyway.

My three cluck a bit on spring mornings and after laying eggs, but that's about it really.

They do get up very early on the light mornings, so you have to restrict their light and try to keep them shut in their coop until a reasonable hour. Mine get up about 6am during the summer, but the rest of the year is fine.

Don't even think about getting a cockerel. They make noise all day long, not just in the mornings.

they aren't very noisy.

no more than cats are in the daytime.

Tehy make noises when they're scared/startle, when they're laying, when they're excited.

Let's just say when you're in the houise, you can't hear them at all.

and they don't make noises at night (apart from "snoring" because they pretty much keep daytime hours.

Well, I'll buck the trend and say that some hens can be noisy. I had two silkie girls which I rehomed because even in a darkened coop they would kick off merry hell early on summer mornings wanting to get out. My pekins are quiet until they lay an egg, then you get the 'victory bok' for about a minute. I do have one alarm chicken who squawks her head off at any percieved threat. Fine, except she thinks sheets on the line, clouds, passing starlings and helicopters are something to get worked up about. Luckily, I have very understanding neighbours Grin I would consider this reasonable noise, though, and no louder than a barking dog for example. Don't get a cockerel, though. They don't all crow all day, but some do. In fact, some crow even when it's dark. Oh, and a pissed off cockerel coming at you with it's spurs can not only be sodding terrifying, but also dangerous.

true - all of my hens have been hybrids, so not too noisy.

In the summer we leave the pophole door open (in a secure run of course!!) so they wake up and let themselves out. it cuts down on "let me OUT!!!" noise.

agree about the Cock - never get one of those unless you live far away in the county and want to breed.
