I'd put them out...our lot get anything that's not meat based.

and we had two eggs this morning, one wyandotte and one maran....hoo-bleeding-ray!!

Mine enjoyed the leftover Christmas pudding, although dh did kindly point out after that it had suet in it...oops.... I'd try them on oranges. Mine get all pasta, rice and veg left overs and peelings... I've just been out in the rain and got two eggs too. Averaging 3-4 from 6 chickens at the moment. Had to send some in for the teacher this morning....(got to do something to get grades up!!!!Joking)

Hens eat meat anyway, don't they? All the hens I've come across fight over snails!

Catsmamma · 07/01/2011 09:07

I just feel a bit peculiar about giving them meat...i'd have not quibbled about the christmas pud either...except I'd have eaten that myself!

My chickens are a bit sniffy about slugs and snails!

They do love a fat worm though!

We are in the far frozen Northern wastes of Scotland so we are living in the dark, Dundee but two eggs is a hint of longer days on the way!

Thanks. Mine have everything else but for some reason, I wasn't sure about oranges. I'm funny about giving them meat (and eggs) which is silly because they eat worms. But most wild chickens do not eat cows.

I had 2 eggs today AND yesterday. The girls are back in my good books after a few days of no eggs.

I was told not citrus fruit, avocados, chocolate or raw potato peelings.

Don't want to upset anyone, but according to DEFRA guidelines you are no longer allowed to feed kitchen scraps to chickens (I believe there is a £1000 and they do prosecute). On my chicken keeper forums it is now banned to discuss what you can/cannot feed to chickens.

I wa also told no citrus and no meat. Mine just get the odd few treats later in the day as their layers pellets make the bulk of their diet.

Mandarin oranges do.

Riven, you are absolutely right. My chickens love spaghetti. So if you cook a whole pan of spaghetti for the chickens it is okay (maybe we are allowed to eat the leftovers?), but if you give them leftovers it becomes a prosecutable offence.

I also don't think that DEFRA realises that chickens are omnivores. I agree you would never give chicken to chickens or eggs (can result in egg picking), but other meat should be okay, but no longer apparently.
