What can I do about a neighbour with an extremely irritating cockerel?

It is driving me mad all morning and for part of the afternoons and means I cant go out into my garden any more as i get sooooo wound up by it. Can I report them to the council as a noise irritant or something? It is SOOOOOO annoying.

just to add the obvious point of it waking us all up at some unearthly time in the morning too. i dont mind any noises from any of their other animals or activities - they are good neighbours in all other ways- but this just is really getting me down. lack of sleep is so hard to bear.

have you tried talking to them about it?

we had a bad one nextdoor, but happily its now gone to the chicken coop in the sky and the new one is remarkably less shouty.

i havent tried to talk to them about it. seems strange to say that but i kind of thought they have chosen to have one and i would rather it wasnt there! we only moved in a year ago but they have acquired it in hte last 3 months. what could i say? surely even if it is inside its coop it still makes its noise? the relationship is slighyly strained as they wanted to buy our house but we beat them to it (nothing naughty we did they just couldnt sell the other property they needed to be able to buy it- not sure they are totally over this issue at all).

well, i have to say, i dont think our neighbor was loving his shouty cockrell anymore than we were (i suspect thats why he ended up in the great chickencoop in the sky)

i guess your only consolation is that if its annoying you guys, you can bet your ass its annoying them too!

do you have any other neighbors its disturbing?

fryalot · 12/08/2010 19:08

we had a very annoying cockerel so it had to go to the great chicken coop in the sky.

I would much rather my neighbours would talk to me if they had a problem - your neighbours may well be thinking that if it's not bothering anyone then it's okay and as soon as they know it's an issue, they'll do something.

Buy them a chicken brick as a hint.

Definitely think you should approach your neighbours about it first. They could try sound proofing the coop, and only letting it out after, say, 8am. If you don't get any where by being friendly, then and only then would i complain to the council. They are unlikely to be thrilled about being reported, and you do have to live next to them. Are you in a rural area?

nowwearefour · 13/08/2010 11:40

the area is quite rural but it is a street of houses and their garden is right right next to ours.

When is it crowing? If it's before 7am or after 11pm, then I think you would be taken seriously. However, if it's only crowing during the day, I'm not sure the council would do anything if you're in a rural location. Regardless, I would try being friendly and approaching your neighbours directly. You might be able to reach a compromise.

nowwearefour · 14/08/2010 20:57

thanks it isnt after 11pm but it is definitely quite a bit before 7am (any time from 5....)

We keep ours shut up so that it doesn't really get going until we let it out. I would go and talk to them about it.

well, I have an excellent recipe for cock ovanne. Wink

I only have hens, and earlier this year my girls started getting up at 5.30am and yelling for their breakfast Hmm They only did it twice before they were locked in their coop until 7.30am, minimum (and I trecked around to all the neighbours offering eggs and apologies). I wouldn't have expected my neighbours to put up with having their sleep disturbed constantly.
