Black box

Thoughts on blackbox insurance this with admiral?

We are adults not teenagers -all the threads ive been reading are mostly parents putting their teens on insurance and conisdering this
however we are 38 & 48 - husband only just passed his test!
We never had a car in our 16 years in london as never needed one (I did previously drive for years in Ireland - have my license 20years)
All the quotes were high like 1400£ - but blackbox is 950£

We will only use the car in the week for maybe a big shop in sainsburys - never will be using it at night so the curfew isnt a problem

Likely only take it out on weekends here and there for days out with the kids
and then for camping trips is the main use this summer.

I've read so many negative things about them - any experience / advice?

I can't offer any advice as I chose not to get one fitted on my 12 year old Yaris when my son (24) passed his test and am stomaching the £1.5k insurance. Is it possible to get him an old banger on TPFT for a couple of years while he builds up no claims? The premiums will drop quite quickly, I would have thought. I think black boxes are probably most cost effective with very young drivers.

i sort of thought if we pay the £950 this year and have the black box and drive carefully and not at night it would hopefully bring the premium right down next year......but maybe this is wishful thinking i don't know!!

I have been driving for over 30 years, impeccable record, about as low-risk as it gets in the UK if you ignore that I'm in Greater Manchester. I've just renewed my insurance today; the quotes involving black boxes were considerably higher than ones without them.

The answer is in there somewhere. My take is that if you' re better off with a black box you're a higher than normal risk and if you want cheaper insurance then you dance to their tune. The flip-side is that as you become more experienced and a lower risk, then loyalty will not pay. When you take out the policy do whatever it takes to get rid of auto-renewal, and shop around, lots.
