How many hours to pass Manual Driving/Lessons

Hi,
I have an automatic Motobility car (meaning my insurance is covered as well as one other person) but this means no learners can drive in it.
for this reason, my daughter will be driving soon and will use my car/insurance.

The only problem is that she wants to learn Manual (fine with me), and is worried about not having any unpaid lessons at home to practice.

she is good at multitasking, picking up things fast and is responsible but driving lessons are expensive(!!!) so was wondering if anyone else/s kids have been in same situation, and could let me know estimation of hours of lessons she will need.

thanks!

My niece has recently passed her test and had 65 hours of lessons and then had to pay for an extra 3 to cover the day of her test (before, during, after) so 68 paid for. Most of her friends only needed 45-50 she said but they did all have parents cars to use so in terms of driving time was probably about the same.

My eldest had 25 hours of lessons and the same again practicing in our car.

MrsBeltane · 03/05/2026 20:59

My son had 10 hours. He would drive me everywhere as practice.

Wow there’s quite some difference here!
I guess it really depends on the person

I’m hoping it will be around the >25hour mark but we shall see!

Depends on the person. My dd had 60 hours but very little private practice. My DS had 40 hours and about 15 hours practice.

Both my son's passed first time after about 15 x 2 hour lessons BUT they used my car for practice and drove everywhere they could. So they probably had about 4 hours additional practice a week.

My daughter had approx 30 hrs of lessons ( 1 hrs only) and went out in our car about 5 times for a max 15 minutes , so negligible really .

@tinyspinyIm hoping it will be more like this!!!

My DS passed first time after 16 hours of lessons and no practice in a parents car. I said I would rather pay for extra lessons. He does pick up stuff very quickly.

Even though it was forever ago I passed I can remember how many because I had to pay and my parents didn’t drive so I had no practice in a parents car and it was 40 hours. I used to drive to work for a lot of my lessons to save on train fares.

My DD had 50 hours of tuition and about 20 hours in her own car. She passed second time so about 7 months spent learning.

One issue is the lack of tests. So you can’t book the practical test until they have passed the theory test. Then once you have the practical booked you can work out when to start the lessons. You don’t want to start the lessons then wait four months until the test.

One of my dds failed and then I had to keep the lessons going for six months until the next test.

Took me 2 years of weekly lessons to pass, unfortunately. Depends on her confidence and how good the instructor is. i wasted 18 months with one instructor who was terrible, and then passed 6 months of a new instructor.

Waitingfordoggo · Yesterday 09:38

My DS passed after 8 lessons! He had some practice with his Dad too. I think that’s unusually quick though- our DD had more like 15 lessons.

DelphiniumBlue · Yesterday 12:50

I was told one lesson for every year of your life, as a rough guide.

Natsku · Yesterday 12:54

I passed a few years ago, after 18 hours (actually 17 because I was too tired to drive back after 2 hours driving the simulator so my instructor drove but I still had to pay) zero practice outside of lessons.

SJM1988 · Yesterday 12:58

I did it with 25 hours of an intensive course, 3 hours of regular lessons and probably 5-10 hours of private practice.

It depends on the person though - I suited an intensive course but I know friends who failed with the intensive course and then spent a further 12 months learning.
