Buying a car for new driver

looking into buying a car for DD17 to learn to drive in. Would you go second hand and buy outright or buy new and lease?
What is most sensible financially? And most reasonable for insurance?

Will it be her car once she passes or do you mean it’s for you and she can use it to learn in?

If it’s for her the answer to all your questions is second hand. Insurance on a brand new car will be astronomical. Plus, I think there are advantages to learning in a very manual car that doesn’t have all the bells and whistles. Get her a little 10 year old run around in a low insurance group eg Polo, Corsa, Fiesta. Mine paid £2200 for their first car and £1800 insurance.

Unless the new car / lease includes insurance (some nhs salary sacrifice schemes used to, not sure about now) go for a second hand car with the lowest insurance group possible. No special editions though as that can push the insurance cost up too.

Thank you. This is helpful.

Second hand for a new driver, always. The chances of a scrape are high and its devastating in a new car. If its an older one then the need to fix it isnt so immediate and will help avoid insurance claims.
