Hi. Just posting for a bit of advice off anyone who may have been in the same situation and how they handled it and how it panned out.
Someone bumped by daughters car yesterday in a morrisons car park when parked up and she was inside the shop. She came out to people around it and a man said this woman has hit your car. My daughter has been driving a year and the car is a fiat 500 she had no real idea what to do and was a bit flummoxed so only got the reg and the ladies number and they agreed to keep it away from insurance companies and get it fixed at the bumpees expense. She got quotes today from 2 garages. £220. She has let the woman know. Woman has replied saying her friend can do it for 100-120 as the quotes are too expensive. My daughter has said your friend cant quote fully without seeing the damage and how she would like to use a proper company (meaning not someone fixing cars on their drive) so asked who the friend works for so their work can be checked. Waiting on a reply now.

I understand this is what quotes are for and she is paying after all but what would be your next step or how would you go with something like this? Shes in 2 minds to report it to police and claim on her insurance. Thanks all.

Go through insurance. She needs to report it to insurance anyway

Unless she gets the money to take her car to the garage of her choice then it's straight to insurance . Let them sort it out . No mates rates , etc.

Insurance company, yes.

Police, no - they won’t be interested as no injuries and details swapped.

BTW, your daughter is the bumpee and the perpetrator is the bumper (think employee and employer).

yes, we all know you SHOULD go through insurance but loads of people don't and personally I wouldn't for this amount of money. She's only been driving a year, even though she isn't at fault her premium will go through the roof. I would tell the person at fault that I wanted to use my choice of garage and they needed payment up front, this happened to me and it was a repair costing £200 and the gentleman went to the body shop and paid them before the work was done. He was at fault as he had parked behind me and left his handbrake off and his car rolled in to mine and scuffed the bumper. He then also had reassurance I wasn't going to pocket the cash and not bother with the repair, it can't be much damage anyway for a couple of hundred quid. If they refuse then bluff and tell them you want to go through insurance, I'm sure they will back down and pay up.

You're right hedda thank you.
And yes toomany. Same when a postal van went into mine a few years ago when mine was parked up. Knew the driver for many years. Nice guy. He was mortified. We also agreed on no insurance. Quote was 150. Told him. He dropped cash off next morning. All repaired within 3 days.
