Electric Car - which make?

Looking for a small - medium EV which isn’t going to cost a fortune. Can install a charger at home.

Be making short journeys (to and from work) so huge range isn’t a problem. We’d use our Kia Sportage for longer journeys.

Really love the Sportage and heard good things about Kia, Skoda, Honda & Hyundai.

Are Nissan Leafs any good? Or are they the equivalent of comfy but mumsy shoes?

Budget not huge (no more than 15-20K ideally) & happy to buy second-hand. Any suggestions or recommendations??
much obliged!

I have a Vauxhall Mokka EV and i love it. 18 months now & would never go back to non EV. It's definitely a medium sized car. Fits 4 comfortably, 5 at a squeeze, and can fit a week's shopping in the boot.

It's a great looking car & super comfortable. Entertainment system is top notch.

I have a home charger & charge twice a week at £4.50 a charge. I do 195 miles on a charge.

Can I just sneak in a question for the Enyaq drivers please? I'm plannning to downsize from my current 7 seater Kodiaq in the not too distant future and the Enyaq is high on my shortlist. Could I just ask if anyone has any experience of towing with one? Obviously I understand that towing will reduce range but just wondered if anyone has any real life experience of by how much? We don't tow too frequently but when we do it's either a boat which doesn't weigh that much or a pretty substantial trailer that does! The Kodiaq is a brilliant tow vehicle which is probably the main reason I'm a bit reluctant to let it go. We already have an EV (a BMW i4) which we love and have done lots of long journeys in so I'm not worried about range in general, but we currently do a roughly 350mile round trip with the trailer every 3 months or so and I'm slightly anxious about the practicalities of that.
OP, if you want a small EV the I think you could do a lot worse than a Renault Zoe. I know several people who have them as the family's second car for short journeys to work etc and they all seem to love them.

I haven't towed with it I'm afraid!

We have a Cupra Born, which is based on the VW ID3, made in the same German factory. Really pleased with it so far. The earlier models of this, and the ID3 suffered from a poor Infortainment system, and the later ones may be over your price range, but worth checking. Whichever car you go for, ask the seller for a battery report. The battery capacity doesn't plummet as some scaremongering may have you believe, but they do drop, so do check it out, and if the seller cannot give you a report, walk away.

I’ve just completed a 3 year lease on an MG4 Trophy, and the values of them used has really dropped. It was a good little car to drive, loads of bells and whistles, and very nippy, but the entertainment system was quite glitchy.

I’ve just replaced it with a Volvo EX30 (another lease), and it’s amazing, I love it.

Is yours affected by the fire 🔥 risk recall?

We’re on our 2nd Renault Megane and would highly recommend them. Good mid-sized car, very easy to use interface - uses google maps as standard, about 180-200 miles fully charged , superb drive … and it has actual physical buttons for heating/ volume etc (not just a touch screen)

Do you know how you find out which ones are? Thinking of leasing one but don’t want to get one that might explode.

EmmaStone · 24/02/2026 22:13

I believe there has been a recall of the ones affected, but I can’t pretend to be an expert on it.

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 24/02/2026 22:18

Look at the Renault Scenic e-tech. They review very well in all areas.

DP thinks the BYD Dolphin is one of the best

BYDs are riddled with electrical issues! Chinese crap

They won’t explode. It’s the older models that aren’t affected I think.

Love the Ex30, looks a lovely car.
