Hi,

I don't know anything about cars really, so reaching out for advice on here. We're expecting our second child in a few months and want to upgrade from our little Ford Fiesta to a good family car with a big boot, as we do lots of road trips and will need extra room for 4.

A while ago I asked Mumsnet on tips for the best spacious family cars, and Skoda Octavia was one of the most recommended cars, so we started looking into getting one of those.

We've put down a deposit on a Skoda Octavia and have to make a decision within the week.

Is £11,200 reasonable? It was registered in December 2021, had only 1 owner from new, and has 70000 miles on the clock. The dealership is AA registered, and if we decide to go ahead they'll get AA to do a full survey.

Thanks!!

Id start by looking at the book price (eg Parkers) and on Autotrader for that make, model, variant to see if the price is reasonable. Make allowances for the AA check and any warranty offered by the garage.

Put the number plate into webuyanycar.com

We buy any car give you way less than market rate. Look the car up in Autotrader, make sure you’re searching like for like spec wise - extras such as sunroof, trim etc make a diffence.
It does sound like a fair price to me, and I’ve bought similar cars in the past.

Buy a Toyota instead.

Skoda Octavia's are amazing, can live in the boot, complete work horses and look stylish, that's quite high mileage for the age, I'd have a look around a bit more but I highly recommend the Octavia.

We had one and it was awful. Overheated all the time, was in and out of the dealership and we had to carry water in bottles to stop and put water in it on journeys because it was losing water constantly. Part exchanged it for a Toyota and would never have a skoda again

Check autotrader. Ours is great.

£11,200 for one of the manual petrol models sounds about right if it's in decent condition and from a reputable dealer. 70,000 miles in a car just over four years old suggests a lot of motorway driving, which is a lot easier on the car than urban stop-start driving. That the same person has kept it all that time suggests it's not a lemon.

Personally I'd always go for the diesel but they will be £3-4k more at this age.

I've got a Skoda Superb and even with a BMW/Mercedes budget would be more than happy to buy another over almost anything else currently on the market.

We have a Skoda (Kodiaq though, not Octavia) and it’s absolutely brilliant. Not flashy but a real workhorse of a car. We’ve driven it all round Europe with no issues, it sometimes sits barely used for a month or two as we use our smaller electric car for local stuff and then has to do thousands of miles in the space of a couple of weeks, and it’s always up to the task! It’s Mr Reliable.

I’d imagine most of those 70k miles are motorway miles, so wouldn’t be overly concerned about the mileage.
