Negotiating car price - main dealer

I’m so crap at stuff like this…..

looking at buying a nearly new car from main dealer. Getting a bank loan so paying cash to them. No car to trade in.

I have looked up all current models of this car for sale on Autotrader and come up with average cost per year / plate and mileage.

Dealers have sent me a link to 4 in their network - in 3 of the 4 cases the cost is below the average for that year / plate.

I am assuming there is built in leeway on the price but not sure how to negotiate given every other car for sale is effectively the same price give or take a few quid.

You don’t really have much option to negotiate on a new/nearly new car sale especially if you are paying cash as they make most of their money on finance. Best option these days is to shop around and ask them to match the lowest price you find or you will walk away. And be prepared to do so.
Going in at month end or year end can help as they may under pressure to make extra sales.

Dealers are unlikely to budge on the price. But you can negotiate extras - service plan included, extended warranty, full tank of fuel, full ad blue if diesel, floor mats, upgraded trim, metallic paint at no extra charge etc

On nearly new from main dealer there isn’t usually much movement. I got the price I wanted looking at dealerships out of my area (expensive part of South east). Bought in Plymouth but worth the 3 hour drive. Also can negotiate on work that might need doing to the car like brake pads change/service etc

Thanks - yeah maybe I’ll try the servicing included. I don’t think I there is much scope to play off another dealer as they are pretty competitively priced anyway. The interest rate on financing is way higher than i can get via a bank so not going down that route.

Motorpoint guarantee the lowest price, if you can beat it they will price match and offer to refund the difference on top.

auto dealers don’t do the old “negotiation” anymore. It’s all supermarket pricing. Theres an algorithm that prices cars and that’s pretty much what you pay. they don’t make much money on the actual car, they make money by upselling- paint protection, seat protection, extended warranty etc.

See if they offer anything like deposit contribution or a service plan if you take out finance. Take the finance then pay it off straight away and keep the perks.

I was going to pay cash for my car but by taking out finance I got two services, a deposit contribution and its first MOT. I took finance out for the minimum amount they would allow (£1500) and paid it off within a couple of days but kept all the perks.

I bought nearly new from a franchise. Salesman said he couldn't reduce the price of the car any further, but he could reduce the cost of the warranty I bought. Total cost reduced for me, so that was fine by me.

Watching with interest as also looking for a car.

Ah that’s interesting. That had crossed my mind but did think I would pass credit checks taking two 20k loans in a few days. Interesting to know I could just go partial credit and get perks.

Priced up everything countrywide in this spec and no real difference by region.

Have a look at Carwow. We got a v good price for our last car. If buying new they often have dealer contributions if bought on finance, ask if they will give that same contribution on a cash sale. They might. See if they have a 0% finance deal. If so, it might be better to use that instead of a personal loan. However you intend to pay, work out the total cost. Dealers can make something seem less expensive by confusing you with different deals, stay cool and take a calculator.

well Having compared all models for sale and feeling that it was a good price I put the details in copilot and it also came back after looking up spec and told me it was a very good price compared to others on the market . Good to know the training at work has come in handy 😂
