What's the quickest way to book a driving test and avoid all this 3-6 month waiting list crap? How can a government website be taken over like this?
I have passed my car theory test on the first attempt and I just don't wanna waste any time. For the multiple-choice section | got 46/50 and do the HPT part I got 65/75 l've done 17 manual driving lessons now and I'm booking to do a some more.Is it like this for other vehicles that I want to learn how to drive and is the 3 to 6 month wait for a test the same for other vehicles as well?

I'd love to know. It's an absolute shit show.

We booked DDs test as soon as she passed her theory in July, for a test centre miles away in February 2026. Managed to get it moved to end of Jan at local test centre.

She's been ready to take her test for a few weeks but despite paying for a cancellation apps out of desperation, precisely zero cancellations have come up.

It looks like if we can't get a cancellation sooner so if she fails in Jan, she could be looking at waiting another 6 months for another test. Virtually a year after she passed her theory through no fault of her own.

What the hell is going on? It is an absolute joke and a rip off. Can't believe the government are letting this happen.

You can't. The best way to do it is book any test you can, I always checked on my phone because I can do the are you a human tasks quicker (it asks you to drag food to the animal, or shows you a computer keyboard and asks what other devices you would use with this so you tick all the photos of a mouse etc)

Tests are released Monday morning 6am it might be a good idea to have your driving license number memorised or ready to copy/paste. Book whatever test you can get and then keep logging in maybe 4-5 times a day to check for earlier appointments. They do come up. I have booked 2 for my son who is at uni so several have come up that are either before he comes home for Christmas or just after he has gone back. First one I grabbed whatever I could, then changed it to one he is home for.

If you log in too many times it will not only kick you out which it does after inactivity anyway but it will block you. There is no way round this system you just have to keep trying. The issue started years ago. As much as you think you are ready to test you are probably far from it. Watch YouTube mock driving tests where they narrate what someone is doing well and what they are failing on to help get you ready. DVSA recommend 45 hours of instructor lessons so you are put in a lot of meeting situations, all kinds of junctions, challenged with reading all the road signs you learned for your theory. Considering how many drivers fuck up daily as seen on dash cam videos on youtube, a lot need refresher courses.

The system is fucked. I personally think only a learner should be able to book a test, not instructors.

The system is a complete joke. Dunno when things are gonna change completely.

They’ve done a consultation recently, I voted for only the learner to be able to book or for one booking per licence. Can instructors book multiple slots without needing to provide a licence number?

Flicke · 31/10/2025 21:05

It seriously needs to change. I cannot believe how much worse it's got just in the last 18 months. Our eldest DD passed in 2024 and the situation wasn't nearly as bad as it is now. Bad but not this bad.

They need to get rid of the rule that you have to pass your practical within 2 years of passing your theory for starters! That's just a money making con now!

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 31/10/2025 21:11

It's awful. My DS has been learning for a year but his test isn't until February and that's not at our local test centre. We keep trying to change it but nothing comes up.

I really hope they scrap the rule saying you have to take the practical within two years of passing the theory test.

I personally think we should organise a protest and force them to take drastic action immediately it can’t continue like this for the next year or two to come. What will be happening in the years to come? The same thing or what? 😫

We paid for a driving test cancellation apps out of desperation (Testi) and not one cancellation has come up in 3 weeks. So neither the conventional, nor the apps can secure a cancellation.

In theory this means , if you need 2 or 3 tests to pass, it could be nearly 2 years between your first and last test, minimum.

Purely because the system is completely fucked.

FullOfMomsense · 06/11/2025 13:55

Use the test booking apps, the government system is fucked. I think it's testcancellation.co.uk that I used for my nieces. It went from a 9 month wait to a 4 month, and then they randomly offered her one the next day that she declined. I think it cost £25 but could be wrong.

You definitely don't have to wait anymore thankfully

The system is an absolute joke and driving instructors are mis-using it. We need to go back to only individuals, not instructors, being allowed to book a test.

TheTwenties · 06/11/2025 14:06

It’s been going on for 5 years so far from a new issue. If you have your own car and aren’t reliant on an instructors car to take your test it opens up on the day tests for which there’s a limited market.

DC had a test booked at the other end of the country at one point this year, was able to change to preferred local option by going onto DVSA early a.m on a Monday. That was still a future date and they were test ready so kept refreshing DVSA website on a day they could take a test and got one. Only had 5 hours to worry/prepare and passed which was a major relief.

LadyDanburysHat · 06/11/2025 14:22

DS 2 didn't start lessons until he passed his theory, then we booked a test and he worked towards that date. it was the easiest way to do it and not waste loads of lessons when you are ready. The driving instructor suggested it too
