First car for very tall new driver

DS (25) has just passed his driving test and I’d like to help him get his first car. I can’t insure him on my Touareg as it would be ludicrously expensive and he simply doesn’t fit in his sister’s mini (we’ve tried..).

He is exceptionally tall and thin - just over 6’7” with very long legs. He’s autistic and has been struggling with his mental health for several years so passing his test is a massive confidence boost. He’s currently doing an access to higher education course but would like to go to university after that. Because of his difficulties it will need to be somewhere he can commute to from home (we live in an area with minimal public transport) so being able to drive is very important to him.

Any ideas as to what models/makes might work for him? He’s got about £4k in savings and I can top that up a bit plus cover his insurance for the first year.

Definitely draw up a list and see where he can go and drive a few to try them out.

Agree that the DD comment wasn’t funny - but some people are just not very bright.

a relative is 6’4

standard mini no go but the polo/fabia/ibiza platform is ok (as are all models of Porsche but that’s probably a bit in the future!!).
He used to drive pool cars at work and I think the mini was the only problematic one.

I’ve also had a mental review of my friend’s teenagers. You could also try citigo/up too as I know a “tall” family have one. A fiat 500 might also be worth a go for the same reason.

And on this basis the usual suspects corsa/ punto etc.

DD's BF is 6ft 5 and he shares an Audi A3 with his 6ft 4 inch brother

I used to work with someone who was 6ft 7” tall and he drove a VW Golf. I offered to pick him up from the train station once and had to put the roof of my Smart Fortwo down to fit him in!

I was going to suggest the same.

It’s the only car my mum ever had that my 6”5 dad could fit in to drive .

Think she regretted that purchase 🫣😂

I think it’s the leg length which is the main problem - his torso isn’t particularly long so when he’s sitting down he looks tall but not that tall.

Not sure if this is helpful but with sports cars you’re sitting with legs straight, he wouldn’t be all knees and steering wheel. My son has an older MX5, they’re very reliable, very safe and surprisingly low insurance. No good for ULEZ though if that’s a factor.

I would go to one of those big car supermarket type places with him where he can sit in a lot of different makes and models to get an idea of what works for him. 2 doors will probably be better than 4 as the central post is further back and the doors open wider to get in.

Great idea, what was I thinking? My post above recommends a sports car like my son but I drive a MiTo which has two big wide doors and a rail that goes really far back to accommodate long legs (I forgot because don’t need!) Also my 0.9 is zero road tax, very economical and not expensive to insure.

My ex was 6'4" and bought an old Peugeot 307 which he was very comfortable in.
