Buying an EV.

Just got a good deal on a new ev. Test drove a few different models, deciding on the Cupra Born. With the introduction of the EV grant, they have added the largest battery, 79kwh to the lowest spec car, which brings the price to £5 below the EV threshold. This is still better specced than other cars we drove. The dealer had a £7,000 deposit contribution, if we used their finance, but we had saved up, so after a few visits, they gave the contribution for a cash sale. Plus an installed charger for £99, Octopus quoted £1,000 for the same charger. It brought the price of a new car down to the price of an 18 month old car with 10,000 miles on the clock. If you include the saving on charger, a total of £9,500 off list, plus a few other bits and pieces thrown in. The manufacturers have to sell 28% of their total sales as EVs this year, last figures for August they we running at about 22%, huge fines for missing that targer, so if you are thinking of doing a Dylan, and going electric, there should be some good deals over the next few weeks.

I wouldn’t touch one again with a 20 foot pole.

had endless problems with it not charging when plugged in, the screen that controlled everything going black, it not turning off when it was supposed to. In the end it had to go back.

charging on the motorways was expensive and difficult and very very stressful. You can’t charge above 80% on the fast chargers and if all the fast chargers are being used you’re stuffed and it’s so so expensive.

Mine was 4 months old and 40% of list price - it’s fine for my needs as only do short journeys these days but I noticed over winter the miles were being consumed very quickly so range wasn’t a fair representation.

Which car @CoastalCalm ?

It’s a Vauxhall Mokka E - I bought it in May and it was registered in Jan , had done just £4K miles

OhDear111 · 01/03/2026 17:39

@TheJaqual What car though?

OhDear111 · 01/03/2026 17:52

@CoastalCalm What Car rates these 3 star and widely available at £20,000 new. So no one pays list price. As they wouldn’t for my car!

@TheJaqual What car though?

That would out me.

and it isn’t relevant - it was an expensive car and regardless of the model, the issues with public charging remain.

Original purchase price in Jan 25 was over £32k per the receipt unless forged lol , I paid just shy of £14k - very happy with that plus the performance is fine for my needs as only do about 50 miles a week on average.

OhDear111 · 01/03/2026 18:19

@CoastalCalm No one pays list price though. It is what it is. New deals are £20,000: no doubt because they need to offload due to quotas. Same with mine. The important thing is to check out nearly new deals, especially on better models as savings are big.

Well the lady who owned mine for 4 months obviously did pay close to list price , my mum would probably do the same tbh if I didn’t go with her ! I’m happy with the purchase , looking at buying another for DH at the moment but he will need a longer range we think

Lol, out you. Unless you have bought a Rimac Nevera I'm fairly sure you're safe. Revealing on Mumsnet you own a Nissan Leaf or whatever will not out you FFS 😂

I’ve posted all over other social media about my issues.

regardless of that, it wasn’t a Nissan leaf.

and as I’ve said. Nothing about my issues with my specific vehicle negate the charging issues.

OhDear111 · 02/03/2026 08:59

@CoastalCalm You have no idea what she paid. Anyone who pays full price for a Mokka has a screw loose! Must have been a very odd person to make the wrong choice too - unless she died of course. Most low mileage young cars are ex demos or managers cars. We’ve had ex JLR snd BMW staff cars that are turned over very quickly. Some cars rarely discount, eg Porche, but cheaper brands invariably do. On line sites like What Car give guide prices.
