Depends on what your requirements are really.

We’ve just bought a Mazda CX5. Look at the reviews on YouTube… we love it! Same sort of size as Sportage/Kuga etc but a bit nicer. We looked at Hyundai Tucson too.

All 3 provide the space that we need. Mainly looking for longevity and reliability.

Thanks I’ll take a look at the Mazda. We have a Tucson as our first car and like that, but just looking at what other brands are like for similar size

I would take the Jeep off the list. Other than that, you need to give us more to go on. What are your requirements?

There's a huge difference in technology between older and newer cars. I think the cars you have looked at are all too old.

Have a look for used Kia, Toyota, Volvo on www.carwow.co.uk
I wouldn't buy a Ford, but you should check the review for any vehicle you're interested in. The ones you mentioned seem overpriced to me.

Honda CR-V or FR-V. I'm on my second Honda because of the excellent reliability and build quality. I bought my first aged 5 years and part ex'd her aged 18 years! I had no engine problems whatsoever in those 13 years. Honda just run and run and run...

Where are you looking OP? Car wow or Autotrader online should guide you. Are you sure you want a diesel? The Kia Sportage is a decent car from the cars on your list and a quick car wow search brought up this :
The newer Kia Neros are also decent cars albeit smaller than the Sportage.

Thanks all!
looking on Motorpoint, as it’s 5 mins from home and I can go and look at the actual car.

I've just upgraded my 2017 Kia Sportage (went for another Sportage, but hybrid) and I really recommend that one. Never gave us any trouble, lovely spacious car and very reliable.

OhDear111 · 23/10/2025 17:15

@missy111id look at a Mini countryman. High quality build and a bit more fun! Surprisingly spacious. Ours never went wrong! VW Golf is still a good car. I’d look at What Car reliability long term tests. My friend has had Mazdas. Cheap to buy but dreadful suspension. A lot of the cheaper cars are very plasticy inside. Plus older models feel dated quickly. Friend nos has a 6 year old Kia Sportage. The newer ones are nicer.

Don’t go for a jeep. They aren’t reliable.

if you get a Ford, make sure it’s not a wet belt. Asking for trouble.

kia and Hyundai are extremely reliable but all cars have their problems.

always do an mot history check on gov.uk - put the reg in and see how the MOTs have gone. If a lot of work, then it only saw the garage once a year and I’d avoid.

when you have found one you’re happy with google the specific engine and “common faults”. Avoid if there’s a common fault.
