Volvo xc90- are they truly expensive to own?

Just that really! Anyone got one and would share their experiences?

We’ve narrowed our 7 seater options down to the following:
Volvo xc90
Hyundai Santa Fe.
Ford tourneo connect.

Whilst they all have their merits, the Volvos safety record makes me rate it higher than the other two. But I wonder annd worry about its maintenance costs - the non-Volvo specific dealer just shrugged and said it’s prestige vehicle so it’s pricey, which wasn’t that helpful! We run two non-prestige brand cars now - a Ford and a Skoda so haven’t had huge bills…

Thanks

Yes they are expensive to run. Ours eats through tyres which are expensive. Any work that needs doing is quite costly - even if you don't go to a dealer or get official parts - because it's built like a tank so it takes ages to remove/get to/fit anything.

We love it though and will run it until it dies. It is so comfortable, even with 5 adults + 2 kids in the very back, plus, apparently nobody has ever died in an accident in an XC90!

If you already have a Skoda and are happy with it what about the Skoda Kodiaq which I believe is a seven seater.
Could give you everything you need and you’re familiar with the driving style, costs and comfort already.

It depends on what sort of driving you’re going to do. If you do a lot of town or city driving, I wouldn’t buy the XC90. If you do lots of motorway driving then yes.

It is expensive though. Not just servicing but tax, insurance etc. I had to have the struts changed on my old one (automatic tailgate) and that cost £1K. So it’s not cheap.

BUT. On motorways mine drives like a dream and has amazing acceleration (not something everything wants) and I can fit four adult golden retrievers and two DDs in it easily. Plus it’s quiet. Which I like.

I absolutely wouldn’t buy new though as its value depreciates so insanely fast (you’re talking £15K in a year with only about 5K miles on the clock). You can get an ex-demo or one that’s only a year or two old for a fraction of the cost and barely any mileage.

Plus the basic ‘cheap’ option has everything anyone could need, so no need to get the jazzy expensive option that has a bunch of pointless features.

Thanks all; we do a mixture of motorway and rural driving and need towing capacity which is leaving us towards the xc90. We saw a Kia Sorrento this morning that DH liked but I didn’t!

@LandSharksAnonymous we’d be looking at 3 years old I think. Which is top end of the budget really.

@ElBanana we go through tyres like you wouldn’t believe so that’s nothing new, just more expensive I guess!
It is the safety element that appeals I must say.

@Helpmefindmysoul I wouldn’t mind the bigger Skoda or even the VW equivalent but we’ve had such an awful, awful experience with the current car and the closest dealership that DH has vowed never to have another - and for once I’m inclined to agree with him.

Ahh fair enough. I don’t have any experience of a Volvo myself. The new ones look quite nice and have also held the safety crown from my understanding. I am indoctrinated to the make of vehicle I like so I couldn’t recommend another vehicle but out of your three options the Volvo seems the best well rounder.

Hope you find the car that works for you soon ☺️
