Small reliable SUV?

Imsosorryalan75 · 04/10/2025 10:32

I love my touran but it old now and needs replacing. As we live in the countryside, im thinking about an SUV type. I like the higher seating position too. I really like the Vauxhall Mokka but a mechanic friend told me they are unreliable. I test drove a kia sportage and found it to big! Any recommendations for a small, but reliable SUV?

Honda HR-V Hybrid.
Toyota C-HR Hybrid.
Toyota Yaris Cross.

Vauxhall's are fuckin shite. All Stellantis group cars are, just like VW.

Pick something else at your own risk!

I don’t hate my Nissan duke. I find it too small tbh but might suit you from what you describe ?

Volvo xc40/60

I have a Vauxhall crossland which I love. I have mainly driven Vauxhall for the last 20 years and touch wood never had any issues.

Volvo xv40

Just sat in a Volvo 40 yesterday gorgeous car for sure.

I have been looking at the Renault Captur as a slightly smaller car. It is a 1 litre petrol engine and cheap to insure, so would be good for DD17 to drive as well.

I have a diesel Mokka, but it is costing me a fortune because I don't drive it enough. It is a blue one, and the paint has also started falling off, which has happened to a lot of them. So do not buy a blue Mokka.

I need something that is higher off the ground than a car to make it easier to get in and out (blue badge holder).

Suzuki Ignis is very (too?) small and very reliable

CrinaCara · 04/10/2025 13:32

We've just bought a Mazda CX 30 and love it

Nothankyov · 04/10/2025 13:34

As PP have mentioned - a Volvo would be a great car. They are really reliable and such great cars.

We've never had an issue with our Mokka, and I really like it.

Kia Niro. The hybrid is slightly smaller than the sportage, has heaps better fuel economy and is also in a much lower insurance group.

AnotherVice · 04/10/2025 14:25

In my experience, Volvos are shit actually off road so it depends what you need really. Nice cars though. I love my new Peugeot 2008!

Imsosorryalan75 · 04/10/2025 14:54

Definitely looking into some of these, trying to fit it into my budget of 7k may be interesting though 😅 thanks for the suggestions. Is petrol better than diesel? I don't really do long drives anymore.

Skoda Kamiq. Smallest of their 3 SUVs and people seem to like. Had mine (used) since February and love it. Skoda are part of the VW group so you get VW parts and engineering at a much lower cost.

Shade17 · 04/10/2025 20:46

Thats the reason NOT to buy one!

My diesel Mokka keeps getting EGR valve problems due to not being driven enough. It has cost me £2K in repairs in a year, to clean the EGR valve, then replace it, then replace the EGR cooler. I need to change the car, but thanks to the paint falling off, the resale value has gone right down :(

Garages have advised me to switch to a petrol car because I just don't drive enough and the valves and filters clog up. Some weeks the car doesn't go anywhere at all.

Love my Ford Puma - it’s hybrid as well so very economical to drive

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 13/10/2025 13:07

Might be a bit small, but DM has a neighbour who is a community midwife in a rural area, who bought a Mini Countryman in similar circumstances.

I got a 3yo PHEV Kia Niro a couple of months ago and am very happy with it.

Previously had VW Passat estates (14y for last and 8y for the previous).
Was looking at a T-Roc, ended up test driving the Niro having found a T-Roc I was going to buy.

The PHEV aspect works well for me, but depends on your driving needs.

Silverbirchleaf · 26/10/2025 11:40

Love my VW T-roc.

Imsosorryalan75 · 04/04/2026 21:59

Just back to say ive ended up with a Kia Stonic. Lovely - very nippy but great for older kids and boot space.

Sounds like a good choice. I was going to say that I looked at the Mokka but decided on a Hyundai Kona which is similar to a Kia.
