We decided to get bmw series 1 car ( used car) 2021.
As soon as I sat in in i felt sunken and even I adjusted the seats to max height, I still could not see over the bonnet.
I am 161cm tall or 5'2 i believe.
DH is now peed off as he wanted the car and me objecting to it s not good abd says its in my head.
Im not a confident driver so i have to see over the bonnet.
Our current car or any previous cars we had felt ok.
Other cars are not option for reasons.
So are bmws low like this? What about short drivers?
Obviously dh is tall so no issues for him but too admitted he couldn't see over the bonnet himself but no problem for him as experienced driver.
About 12 years ago Dh had his bmw 320 and i remember myyself sitting in it ( I couldn't drive as too low) and it felt like laying down.

I’m 5ft1 I don’t think I’ve ever seen over a bonnet 🤣 although it is a low car. I went from a jeep type to a bmw and it is low. I had a Honda civic a few yrs ago it was also low. More so a problem if ur old and struggle to get out lol. If u go for x3 etc they are jeep/suv type BMWs so higher up, although in my opinion they aren’t as nice as the saloon type.

Another 5'2 person here who has also never seen over a bonnet! When I first started driving eons ago I would sit on a cushion 🤣.

I have a BMW 1 series and a sports version so really low. I know the bonnet is quite long so I've learnt to 'judge it', but if you really feel you need to see over the bonnet you may need an SUV type car.

BMWs are supposed to be drivers’ cars. That’s the whole point of the brand, and a big part of its heritage. A low-set driving position is part of that (along with straight-six engines, RWD etc). My M440i is certainly low, and I also have the seat quite low. If you’re in the market for a saloon, coupe or hatchback & don’t like a low driving position, BMW might not be the right brand for you.

They also make big SUVs which do have higher driving positions, so you could consider one of those if it’s in your budget.

Get a booster seat that's what my tiny mate does

The hatchback and saloon BMW’s all have low driving positions, it’s part of the driving experience and why they are so amazing to drive. The SUV’s have a higher driving position but they’re not as fun to drive.

Thanks.
Yeah we have at the moment mercedes gla which is classified actually as smaller Suv but sadly uts becoming too pricey to run, did some math and the bmw would be literally half price in fuel yearly consumption.
In all cars I ever drove i see the bonnet but its like pointing down, so its not really in my face.
However today with the bmw, I just felt like slumped in and the bonnet was like an obstacle in front of me to see the road, not to mention couldn't see the imminent road at all or the end of the car.
Not sure how to describe..
The best car i ever drove was Mercedes A class, it felt like driving inside my palm.

I was hoping the bmw would be same..

My BMW 1 series is definitely economical to run. It's a diesel though and went from London to Edinburgh on just under one tank of fuel. Three people in the car was less than a third of train costs. I don't use it for my day to day London travel but I need to do motorway drives a couple of times a week and it's a beaut for this. Comfortable drive and very easy on the purse.

Im 5.7 and in a very low pretty car now, can’t see over the bonnet

Glittertwins · 21/09/2025 11:15

DH’s previous 435d was very low, bit too much for me but the current pair we have are slightly less low down. I can’t see over the bonnet but it doesn’t bother me.

Try taking a (box sided) cushion with you to the garage and see if it helps.

Different cars have different shapes of bonnets. Some I can see over. Others not so much. You get used to it. And it’s fine if you have front parking sensors.
