Can anyone help with a warranty and gearbox question please?

Hi there. I have a Skoda Fabia DSG semi automatic. It is feeling draggy when pulling away and actually making me quite stressed to drive as I can't shift forward gently into parking spaces and it is not smooth in heavy traffic when I'm required to inch forward. It has also started revving/surging occassionally when I've not got my foot on the accelerator.

I bought the car second hand last year and it's still within warranty. When I had a service recently the mechanic agreed with my concerns and said it was probably a transmission issue and that I should go to a DSG transmissions person for them to run a check then advise, then to speak to the warranty people.

However, my concern, based on a brief hypothetical conversation I had with the garage who I bought the car from and who I have the warranty with, is that they will argue that it's wear and tear and therefore not elligible to be covered by the warranty. Can anyone advise how I would make the case that it's not wear and tear or know how that is determined and who by?

Thanks so much in advance. I'm a confident person normally but when it comes to liaising with garages around cars I immediately feel on the back foot!

Im thinking you need to tell us:
How old is the car.
what is the mileage.
is there a service history.

Thanks for your reply. The car is 2015. Mileage is just over 31,000. The car has had six services (annually initially then a gap around covid. Hope that helps. Many thanks.

I should have added, the car was serviced in 2024 before I bought it, then by me recently.

I wouldn't expect there to be an issue in the gearbox / clutch at that mileage.

That said, my experience of those warranties is that they cover everything except the part that is broken. I would be tempted to find and independent gearbox specialist and get them to opine, and if their view is that it is not wear and tear, you will have a better chance to get the warranty to cover it.

The warranty is just the garage you bought it from I assume, I would think a gearbox problem in a ten year old car with an incomplete service history will be deemed fair wear and tear.

Has the gearbox ever had its oil & filter changed and if so, who did it? its not straight forward.

31k in 10 years, indicates very infrequent use/short journeys, the service interval is 40k miles BUT after 10years, it should have been changed.

The DSG box is very common across the VW range, usually very reliable

As for your warranty, you'd need to discuss that with the garage.

Thank you so much everyone for your replies, it's much appreciated. I don't believe the gearbox has ever had a specific service, no. From what I can see, the services have just been bog standard oil/filter ones. The most recent service, post me getting the car, was a full service but the mechanic said he didn't deal with transmissions so recommended going elsewhere to have the DSG looked at. Thanks again.

And yes, the warranty is with the garage I bought the car from.

On the Skoda website you can put in the VIN and see if it’s covered by any recall - see screenshot attached (can be under review)

Can anyone help with a warranty and gearbox question please?

Thank you, I will take a look.

Some DSG variants are less reliable than others. Aftermarket warranties generally aren’t worth the paper they’re written on and usually require a component to have failed completely before they’ll even think about paying out. Find a good local DSG specialist and get their view.

Many thanks for your advice.
