Should I inform my insurance? Car bumped me in car park

So, someone hit my car today whilst it was parked and I was standing next to it. The wheels were turned so the driver hit the front wheel rather than the body of the car - visibly there is no damage but he was going pretty fast and it made quite a crunch sound.

No local garages can fit me in for an inspection until next week at the earliest but a bloke standing nearby had a (cursory) look and said that although he didnt see anything, there could be damage to the chassis or something. It's a new car and we have the finance contract for another 3.5 years so we're stuck with it if it does develop issues.

The old chap who hit me was a bit of a menace to be frank - he was going fast and pulled into the space quickly, then pulled out and tried to repark, almost hitting the car on the other side. He then claimed it was fine and nothing to worry about! He gave me his name and phone number but said he couldnt remember his insurers. My husband followed up with a call later but the man said he really really didnt want to involve the insurers and would pay cash. I'm not in it to make money, I don't want a payout, I just want to be covered in case the garage check next week discovers an issue.

What would you do in this situation? My feeling is it'd be mad not to report to the insurance company but our premium is already £1000 per year and, even though its not my fault and there might be no damage, the thought of increasing that significantly makes me feel a bit sick. Oh and finally, I understand I can do a 'notification of incident' rather than a claim which would mean I'm covered if issues are discovered next week.

Any advice very gratefully received, thank you.

Everyone will jump on and say inform insurance, but it was pretty common years ago to sort it amongst drivers, and certainly what we did when someone hit us when we were parked a couple of years ago. It wasn’t a bother, the garage quoted, she paid, and we signed to say we accepted the payment as full & final costs to damages. Our insurance is no where near the cost of yours, I wouldn’t fancy my premiums going up if they were that much to begin with.

If you feel you want to inform them, just do that, it’s not going to affect anyone on here so doesn’t matter what anyone else would do tbh.

Yeah I shouldn’t bother. I had a similar thing. A girl bumped me in a car park. She admitted it but wouldn’t answer the phone when I tried to contact her and the insurance got no response so I had to leave it. Then my premium went up anyways as they said I was more likely to have an accident 😵‍💫

Thanks for the responses, both - in the end, I decided to tell the insurers as it sounded like the premium might go up but only by a couple of %. So relieved not to have to worry about it any more - well, until it's time to renew my insurance then I might be singing a different tune!
