So many cars these days are automatic, is there still any point to go for manual?

I got a manual 30+ years ago when I knew I had to buy my own car, manuals were way cheaper.
Glad I did. I now use a manual car to tow boats, caravans and trailers, as well as a 4 wheel drive to go on the beach.
I guess it's all about lifestyle and what you will need it for.
My daughter has an automatic license, while my son is going for a manual as he wants to have the choice.

I’ll probably just put my kids through test on an automatic and then if they want to do manual later on they can.

Why potentially take two tests when one is easy enough to do and will suffice?

This. It costs a fortune to learn to drive why not just learn to drive a manual car

Depends on the age of the learner. If a teenager, learn in a manual. It may be handy for getting a cheaper first car and hire cars (a lot of manual hire cars in the uk).

If an older driver, learning in an automatic. It saves hassle and time.

A relative learnt to drive in their late 30s. Got manual licence. They have only ever driven and owned top of the range cars. On holiday, they borrowed a car and were uncomfortable driving said car, because although it was an automatic, it didn't have cruise control, blind spot sensor, etc.

If you have enough money, the car drives for you. Get the simplest licence.

(Also younger driver tend to take pride in being able to "drive", but older drivers more care about getting from A to B quickly and safely.)

My children are learning to drive and I’ve debated this. I want them to be able to drive any car so they’re learning manual.
