Hi I am looking to buy a car but unsure what to get, I really want an electronic handbrake and room to fit a dog in a boot. I only drive about 7 miles a day.

vw troc or t cross (depending on size of dog)

A mobility scooter? 😂

I have a border collie, it needs to be quite low as she is getting older now, I do not mind looking for something 1-2 years old

A safe choice when you don't know what else to buy is a Golf.

I was also going to suggest a golf or VAG group variant like a skoda octavia, or seat leon. If u fancy something slightly more interesting a cupra formentor isn't as high as a classic suv and offers a more upright driving position on the same platform.

Will second a Golf! Mine is 13 years old now, bought it for an absolute bargain price 11 years ago, literally a work horse of a car, perfect for me, dd and the similarly sized dog, and my local work commute.

Keep thinking I should upgrade it but feel disloyal 🤣

@daisydaisyrose

Look if it still works fine and does everything you want then why change it.

Imagine if you got rid of it for an "upgrade " only to have problems with your "upgrade" - I would feel like a complete disloyal mug.

We lease cars so have a quick turnaround but honestly we have had some really "pish" cars. My absolute favourite is a ford focus

TeenLifeMum · 20/01/2025 23:01

I like the Ford Puma.

You could always get a step or a ramp for the dog, which will give you a wider choice or cars.

A hybrid might work for your low mileage, as pretty much all your mileage should be on the battery if you choose the right kind.

Or as you don't drive very far, you could spend a lot less on an older one, with a small petrol engine. Keep it serviced and it will be unlikely to let you down and last for years, but if it does, you can just leave it, get a bus or taxi and deal with it later.

VW are below average in terms of reliability these days so I wouldn’t bother with a Golf or similar.

OP, have a look at the latest What Car reliability index, should give you a good idea of cars to look at and ones to avoid.

A second hand BMW estate. I bloody loved the last one I had and really miss that German quality and engineering.
