SUV with biggest boot

We are thinking of getting a new car this year, and looking for your wisdom!

We currently have a Peugeot 5008 which has been a great car but there's a couple of things wrong with it now and so we are thinking of trading it in.

We have 2 kids and two large dogs. Boot space is the top priority, as both dogs travel in there. We often do long journeys a few times of year, so plenty of space in the middle row is ideal too.

Other than that, something that drives well and is safe and reliable with a good infotainment centre.

I'll not give a budget as I'm interested to hear people's opinions without a budget in mind.

Have been looking at ones such as (but not necessarily new) :

Volkswagen Toureg
Land Rover Discovery
Volvo XC90
Mercedes GLS

My brother has the outlander and its amazing for space and comfort and it's hybrid. We have the jeep renegade and a large dog and wheelchair they all fit with a bit of adjustment.

I used to easily fit three Labradors in my Honda CRV. It’s not just the capacity of the boot, it’s the shape, and Honda do that well. However, I would say, they have changed their shape slightly and I haven’t seen the latest incarnation as I went for a BMW iX3 this time (boot size not great but I’ve only got the one dog now…)

Not read the replies sorry as in a bit of a rush, but don't just look at the size of the boot, also check out the size of the aperture and the sill height as those things both make a big difference to how easy is to get things in and out. Also, whether the rear seats lie completely flat. Lots don't, which reduces how much you can fit in if you want to carry large loads. When I bought my current car I took my bike, which is the thing I most commonly put in the back with seats down, to the showrooms and tried to put it in without assistance. That ruled out a lot of cars that looked good initially. My shortlist ended up being a Skoda Kodiaq and two Subarus whose names I have forgotten sorry, one was an estate and the other an SUV. I got the Skoda as they offered me the best deal financially but would have been happy with any of the 3.

@sleepfortheweek yes I think it should easily be big enough, the boot is massive but it does slope so would depend on the height of your dog. We have dachshunds so not been an issue!

But my colleague has a model Y and said his golden retriever is very comfortable in the boot.

etonmessedup · 13/01/2025 12:18

It also has dog mode for the aircon. Keeps the car at a comfortable temperature for the dog while you're parked. So if you need to nip into a shop in summer and leave dog in the car you can.

DataPup · 13/01/2025 12:23

It depends on how your dogs like to travel, but for us there's not enough headroom in the model y for our labs.

But my colleague has a model Y and said his golden retriever is very comfortable in the boot.

We also have both of those things and I can confirm that DDog IS indeed comfortable in the boot, with the added bonus of a front boot as well

DataPup · 13/01/2025 12:33

That's why I said it depends on the dog. One golden retriever who is happy to travel lying down is fine, if you have multiple large dogs who like to sit up it doesn't work. If you google photos, half the pictures are of a dog sat in an open boot with it's head in a position it couldn't be in if the boot was closed.

sleepfortheweek · 13/01/2025 13:53

Thank you - they both occasionally sit up and are quite tall dogs (lurchers) so maybe not suitable.

Also looked at the model X which seemed to have a bigger boot but maybe the same issues regarding height
